To be sung to the tune of the hippopotamus song:

Bugs, bugs, inglorious bugs
Nothing quite like them for spilling on rugs
So get out the bug spray, squish them and then pray
That you don't swallow those inglorious bugs!

Hi Pat!

The second of those 2 watch display units sold for over $1,000 last but I still don't have it!

it was supposed to be at the PO yesterday but a rather lackadaisical clerk couldn't find it.

I just called the supervisor and he had left it in the back office, a place she didn't look. So I'll make up an addressed box for it and repack it when I get there today.

Good luck hunting later!

Good Morning from chilly NH where temps are supposed to move out of the teens today.

Hi Michael We've managed to dodge the bullet yet again with snow staying south of us. I see that the Feds have closed offices in the metro DC area due to another incoming snow event.

My girlfriend and I are off for another treasure hunt today. This time we are traveling into bookdelle's territory. I think we stopped at her group shop last time we were in that area.

Now to get listing.

Good morning. Funny, Laurie!

Snow, snow, inglorious snow!

For those of you here who are not English, here is the inspiration for that sentence. It was sung by Flanders and Swann.

KAMABRI - I just saw tracks, no critter. They were 15 feet from my front door.

BEADS! - Is that the table you got in the fall? I think we talked about it at one time.
I love mine. It is the best card table and I can pile lots of books on it.
Mine was free, at the dump several years ago.

CASINO - LOL I know what bears do in the woods....but the tracks look like wolf tracks.

worldofantiques: Hearty Har-Har-Har - I have a little *pug* nose, so my whole face would be hitting the keys! (^.^) I've been using my middle, ring and indicator (aka 'pinky' - the one you stick out in a crook when sipping tea with fine company), fingers - the burnt one sticking up in the air like it wants attention. I'm getting better at typing - really should take lessons... some day when I get a 'round tuit'.

dupo: Yes, I have a couple mangles - one small and one large for doing sheets, etc.. I do laundry for a couple elderly shut-ins and a few cancer treatment patients. It makes their sheets and pillow cases smooth and soft... plus hubby loves them ironed. UNFORTUNATELY, I started when we were first married and I don't think he would appreciate a change now. So, you know how it goes... be careful and pay attention OR pay a burning price. I just got distracted for a moment and.... well, you know how it goes.

Am almost at the halfway point - only 10 more to go to reach that... so I'd better get back to it. I'm ashamed to say the I have corrected more spelling errors and other mistakes than not. What must buyers think?

Have A Wonderful Night and some FANTASTIC Dreams Everyone.

It's sad that so many people today never know the smell of washing dried in the open air.

I remember mangling clothes etc at my grandmother's then hoisting the pegged items high in the air using a wooden pole.

kamabri Do you have a mangle in your home? I haven't seen one of those in years. Ouch on the finger.

One of my summer jobs while in high school was working in a laundry ... and my particular job was to operate the mangler. We laundered and ironed sheets and pillow cases for several motels.

Hi everyone!

A busy day today with some funny moments. I had to get two beefy rednecks to help me into and out of the Greeky Spoon as there's no way I can walk on ice and snow.

So there we were walking hand in hand with the other guys cheering from the windows!

kamabri, sorry about your finger. I used to try typing with my nose in situations like that but it kept sliding off the keys. ;-)

wellie, we have a gazillion tracks on our snow covered lawn but I was puzzled by some - they looked like small human footprints.

The item I accidentally sent to Texas the other day arrived back at our post office but when I got there they couldn't find it and it wasn't delivered here. As it ends tonight and is up to nearly $900 I hope they find it tomorrow!

Interesting alarm clock Clem. Trouble is, I fell asleep watching it on our slow connection!

Nah... I don't think that it has anything to do with the #13 - I was born on the 13th. and most of the wonderful events of my life have occurred with a 13 someplace around them. So, actually, 13 is a very lucky number for me.

Stopped by the ER while we were out today... nurse looked at it and said "eeeewww - nasty". Doctor looked at it and said "eeeewww - nasty". It didn't hurt all that bad until after they completed their ministrations. Now it is throbbing to beat the dickens!

It sure is making the moving of books to my new-and-improved store a tad more difficult and slow. Speaking of which, I *thought* I'd be a big fish in a little pond, but it seems that quite a few sellers from here have the same idea... and my store is going to get me a little fish in a big pond, I'm afraid. Oh well, competition is supposed to be a good thing. Hahahahaha! Hopefully, I should be done moving by the end of the month and won't have to pay another months rent to eBay.

Hubby collected his $1.00 winnings from Mike. I thought they would bet on the Pro-Bowl too, but they didn't. They couldn't agree on who got what team.

We're stocked up and ready for bear. We could probably survive until spring! (^.^) as long as we didn't loose electric for more than a week or so. The generator eats up a lot of diesel fuel!

wellingtonct: I am SOOOO jealous! A timber wolf!!! What I wouldn't give to see one - at a distance... a LONG distance... through field glasses!

Take Care Everyone. Stay safe and warm. Hugs and prayers to those who need them.

Briguy update

We WASTED the one pure male fantasy day (Super Bowl Sunday) we get each year! Exactly ONE fish was caught, and we felt so sorry for it.....we let it go!

However, I AM getting "buff". I must have manually drilled 30 holes through the ice, until it looked like swiss cheese. Each of them 14" deep too. pant, pant :o(

I'm starting to HATE all fish with a passion.

Now to finish my bitter non fish lunch (a consolation deli ham sammich). Then off until later.

BBL

PS -- Even the offensive "Marching through Georgia" song doesn't bother me anymore. I'm morphing from a squirrel eating southern redneck.....to a drunken curmudgeon ice fishing northern lakes. Yes....A YANKEE!

Good Morning Everyone
I'm in the midst of a pity party for myself today. I fried my very favoritest finger on the mangle this morning while doing pillowcases. It's the one I use to hunt-and-peck on the keyboard... Oh, why couldn't it have been the indicator finger?!?! I rarely use THAT one.

Hubby said that he will take me to lunch and commiserate with me. He's such a dear heart. (Though I think his underlying motive is to collect his winnings from Mike at the Coffee Pot diner)

So glad we dodged the bullet with that last storm, but I'm afraid that we won't be so lucky with the up-and-coming one. We keep getting warnings to be prepared... So, while we are out, might as well get a few things at the grocers.

I really feel so sorry for all of those who were hit hard with the last storm... radio said that over 300K were still without power - NOT the weather for that! If they want to join my pity party... soups on.

Take care everyone... hugs and prayers to those who need them.

Born on this day...William Tecumseh Sherman...1820-1891

William Tecumseh Sherman was an American soldier, businessman, educator and author. He served as a General in the Union Army during the Civil War, for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the "scorched earth" policies that he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States.

In 1864, Sherman succeeded Grant as the Union commander in the western theater of the war. He proceeded to lead his troops to the capture of the city of Atlanta, a military success that contributed to the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman's subsequent march through Georgia and the Carolinas further undermined the Confederacy's ability to continue fighting. He accepted the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida in April 1865.

He steadfastly refused to be drawn into politics after the War, and in 1875 published his Memoirs, one of the best-known firsthand accounts of the Civil War.

Quotes:

"If I had my choice I would kill every reporter in the world but I am sure we would be getting reports from hell before breakfast.”

"War is cruelty. There's no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.”

“If forced to choose between the penitentiary and the White House for four years, I would say the penitentiary, thank you”

Mother and her roommate seem comfortable with the heat, but I've learned to dress in layers when I go to visit so I can strip down to shirt and skirt when I arrive. Good morning from sunny Maine. Am spending the morning trying to get more organized around here and then this afternoon we're going to do a few errands. I still have more odds and ends of things to bring over from the old house but am trying to just get a few things a day now. DH is getting annoyed at having to bring more stuff here now-at least until something he wants turns up missing I'm sure! He is obviously tired in spite of not really having done much. Hard to watch him go downhill like this.

Enjoyed the Super Bowl yesterday as it turned out to be an exciting game. Some of the ads were quite good, but a lot I found to be disappointing or downright annoying. Of course I'm not the target audience for most of the advertisers anyway! Didn't watch mujch of the halftime show after I caught a couple of minutes of it-did not like the featured group at all.

bbg Congratulations on your sale!

wellington I do appreciate your comments and your concern, and I'm planning to pick up a carbon monoxide detector when I go to Walmart today or tomorrow. Definitely something we should have. And those sound like the tracks of a big animal! Hope it's not a wolf or even a coyote. We've been hearing coyotes at night sometimes lately and it's eerie. Saw what I thought might be a coyote in the field late in the day recently but it turned out to be a really large red fox. Glad I keep my cat inside and that Zach is never allowed outside alone!

Good morning,

Cloudy and cold at 16 degrees but snow is not supposed to arrive until tomorrow and Wednesday.

No, banchee , I guess that I did not expect it to go quite that high.I did know that those tables were very sought after. I wonder if the fact that there was a picture of the read-for-shipping item as one of the images had anything to do with the good price.

I/ We have a 301A Singer sewing machine up this week. It is all packaged and ready to ship, too. The image is as part of the description on it ,too. I worry about DH feeling well enough to package an item like that after it is sold. I surely could not do it. And , I worry, about having the packaging materials easily available. So just thought it best to not even put anything like that up until it is packaged.

anon11151 I agree with you about the magazine banning. Sounds kinda fishy to me. But what do I know? Never heard of the magazine. Can we take it from the title of the magazine and your remarks that it is a magazine about using pot ?

Good morning from a silent, still, serene section of snow covered Indiana where it is currently 6º with up to a foot of the white stuff expected tonight.

Last night's game didn't seem to stop bidding on our stuff - we went up $450 on the 9 items in the last 5 minutes!

Well done Helen on your sales!

Pat, go to VA - the work will still be here when you return.

Clem, a scary ride - glad you are OK. My body is fine after yesterday's fall - the thick lined Carhartt shirt I was wearing saved me from more injury.

Loads of deer tracks etc in our snow right now.

On with listing as 24 end tonight - I mis-timed some 7 day and 10 day listings!

anon--it's Ebay's business so they are legally allowed to make the rules. The Free Speech provisions apply to Congress making laws... Ebay seldom reverses decisions due to protest from sellers. Teacher's manuals have been banned for some time, something much less controversial

Ebay has banned the sale of High Times Magazine. This is mainstream magazine that can be bought in any convience store. This is going to far. Please people write, call, e-mail ebay. Book Banning. Free Speech. Freedom of press. This is just plan censorship. Intersting that this happens the same time the former CEO of ebay officially kicks off her bid for Gov. of Ca, which is making a push to legalize pot so they can have a taxible income base. The timing is alwfully intersting.

Good Morning from scenic Lake Sunapee where a narrow crescent moon is still in the sky and its reflection is on the ice on the lake.

No football yesterday but I did make SO's favorite brownies...and they are calling out to me.... Dark choc with toasted pecans. They are his favorites.

B!B!G! What a super sale! Congrads. Did you expect it to go that high?

I am still trying to decide: Do I go to VA with SO or do I stay here and work.

{Sigh} Decisions. Decisions.

Oh, meant to say, grano - I like those laprobes. The multicolored one (black background) looks like an afghan my grandma made years ago (still my favorite of all the ones she made. Those tended to be larger, of course, about 5' x 4' or so. Laprobes are thoughtful things for elders in nursing homes or anywhere, for that matter! I think some of it is psychological, but those places always seem chilly, even though they're not really. And a "blanky" is a comfort. One of the greatest things to come along is fleece stuff. Lightweight yet warm.

Hi, guys! I think the Saints deserved to win; and maybe a shot in the arm for N.O.? The Colts didn't embarrass themselves either.

Watched Undercover Boss - (saw a little of it last week, and this was, I guess, the 2nd show). We liked it, good idea. Next week sounds promising; the owner of Hooters goes undercover for a week. One manager has some sexist game he makes the waitresses play in order to leave early; can't wait to see him get his comeuppance! That type of reality show I don't mind, but the trash on VH1 and MTV are a whole nother thing (my super sweet 16 (gag), all those "rock star seeks life companion", or for that matter, the Bachelor, etc etc really leave me cold. Those shows have proliferated because they're cheap to produce and there are always people who want to get their 15 minutes of fame no matter how degrading. Amazing Race and Survivor have, well, survived because they're well planned and produced.

I ran into freezing fog yesterday morning; in seconds my windshield iced up and had I not hit the hazards and pulled off as far as I could, people following me would probably have piled right into me. Stupidly, I had only the heater vents on, not the defrosters. I saw the fog up ahead, and was in it before I thought; and for the next 10 miles, I drove about 45 mph with the hazards. Nobody passed me, either, since viz was less than 1/4 mile. I stayed in Bridger (midway point) for nearly an hour trying to decide if I should continue on, because it was snowing lightly too. Met a motorist coming south who said it "wasn't bad" (out here that can mean only a foot of snow on the road) so I went on in. Coming home later no fog, weak sunshine and clear roads.

Love all the great pictures. I went to one thrift to say hi to my friend, and turned in a couple shopping bags of books at my bookstore and picked up 10 or so to read. Unfortunately, ONE of the ones I traded in happened to be a paperback from the library here! Dammit, now I'll have to buy one to replace it. But thank God it wasn't a hardback. Have read all the Charlayne Harris "vampire" books, and enjoyed them; thinking about trying to see if my video store has True Blood, maybe, just to see how her stories translated into a show. One of you mentioned it awhile back - what did you think?

Hope y'all are recovering from your spills, chills and ills!

Think I am going to bed. I am tired.

I may look up one more thing online before I go up stairs though.

When I was slowly, very slowly, unloading the car, I saw some tracks in the driveway. Very BIG tracks of the canine variety. I may go look them up. They are about 4 1/2 inches long, with a 30 inch walking stride.

We have had coyotes here but I think this could be a new critter. There are wolves in the U.P. of Michigan. I am wondering if one came over on the ice.

Needless to say Teddy will be kept very close to me till I figure out what and/or where it is.

I took pictures of the tracks. They appear to be fairly fresh...as in within the last 24 hours.

grano9 Well done on the lap robes! They look both cheery and warm. What dimensions are the finished product? That might be a nice project for me if I get tired of knitting baby hats and booties for charity.

A few times today I checked the Animal Planet Channel where they were having the 6th Annual Puppy Bowl. The frolicking puppies were adorable ... but then, what puppies aren't? I wouldn't care to watch the Puppy Bowl for hour after hour, but it made nice little breaks in between tasks.

BETH, BEADS! - Thanks for the input. At least I know that others have done it.

My blender is a free from the 'side of the road' and has an "iffy" motor. I wouldn't want to strain it, but my food processor is new but I have never used it. as I totally forgot I had it. It was a gift several years ago.

I did get a hand crank grain grinder but my arms are not good on repetitive movement so not sure I can do it. They ( the store) said i could play with it to see if I could use it. I got 25% off today but sale is over before I would get off Island again so I grabbed it.

I met an Amish woman yesterday at a flea market. It turned out that her DH is Gluten Intolerant. She and I talked for over an hour and exchanged addresses. I learned more from her about GF flour than I have learned by reading on-line. She gave me her flour mix blend recipe and her main bread recipe. She is a bit more modern Amish and does use some electricity, so she has a bread machine.
She hand grinds a lot of her flour from whole rice. It would be a ton cheaper. A two pound bag of Brown Rice flour is $5.00 or more.
I could get a big bag of Brown Rice for 10-15 dollars, I think, and make it much cheaper. The pre-mixed flours (that measure one to one substituted in regular recipes) are $4.00 - $5.00 for 20-24 OUNCES!

WOA - We will have to design something that you can get on and off easily. With one hand from a standing position.

Wellie, I found something with which to kill them - a sub machine gun! As for those grippy things I used to have some in England. The problem is, when I enter the house with them they slip on the floor! And I can't take them off without sitting down.

Back to the sofa for another 90 minutes of commercials.

Hi everyone. I was remiss, earlier, in not making a greeting.

I am home......finally. Teddy is in his bed under the desk and I am sure that as soon as we go upstairs he will roll around on the bed reveling in being in "his" place. He was so good while we were at the home. He barely makes a sound and often just has to wait patiently for me. He can not have free roam as Mom could trip on him so he stays on the blow up bed.

Anyone...Has anyone ever ground up rice or grain in a food processor? I have one which I had forgotten about. I want to grind rice to make rice flour.

TREASURMOMZ - Sorry you have the flu. This is when you move the buisness isn't it? I hope that went or goes smoothly.

MAINELADY - I figured you were on top of things but for all of you to get sick at the same time ( but I did not know individual particulars) sounded odd. I figured a comment was better than not commenting and your having a real problem. I missed your actual move but BB-BOO saved the boards for me. Maybe I will have time to go back and read the gory details.

RAINBOWTREASURES - I made the brownies they were really good. Thank you again.

WOA - You woke those little buggers up when you made their attic nice and warm. They are a pain. If you find something to kill them let us know.

Could you get those grippy things that go on a shoe with springs to give you purchase in slippery conditions.
I hold Mom's foot with mine when she gets in my car "just in case".

HIHOELAH - OH MY!!!

How did you get out of all that snow?

Is your car still there?

If not how long were you stuck?

Etc, etc, inquiring minds want to know. Well, at least I do.

It looks just like Chicago in 1967.

Banchee - Yes. These med things are in relation to the accident. I was hit, while I was at a standstill, at about 30 MPH or so.
If I was an "I" It whipped me into a "C" a backwards and forwards a bunch. Instant excruciating headache, which manifest to a degree every now and then. It was the hardest hit I ever have had in my entire life.
I think I blacked out too, but didn't realized that till a few weeks later. The first thing I was aware of what her standing outside of her car. I do not remember any visual, of the hit, just noise. I was mentally stunned and not thinking clearly.
I should get all of my costs back as I think that is a given. Tons of travel and paying someone to feed horses and lost income 'cause I could not be open and lost income from my winter job. I gritted my teeth and worked as much as I could but often had to leave early. The time period was when all my lost time was overtime too.
I still don't know if I will be able to ride my younger horses to the degree they need or even at all.
I was able to do everything prior to the hit. carry cases of wine at winter work hay at home unload trucks do fence etc then could barley lift my fanny pack. Could carry nothing up in my arms. But handled bags do pretty well. I just let my arms hang. All the stuff I collect, now, has to be fairly light. Improvement is very slow but it is there. It just takes a long time for nerves to heal.
I don't know how the compensation for lost business at the farm works or pain and suffering. Franky what ever it ends up being is not enough for messing up my life so badly.

WOA, sorry to hear about your ladybird problem. That doesn't sound fun at all.

Maybe it's because I'm feeling cantankerous with my flu, but I have to say I have a bit of a problem with your Colts 'blitz' image. If they were playing anyone but New Orleans I would think it was cute, but Katrina caused too much devastation to use a hurricane image for a football game.

I love the attention the Lower 9th Ward got in the pregame show today, and *really* liked the Winton Marsalis New Orleans/Saints retrospective. That man has some serious talent, and I loved learning he received his first trumpet at age 6 -- given to him by Al Hirt.

We have a serious ladybird (nasty Asian beetles really) problem here. Since the attic was insulated on Thursday, they've been coming out of the woodwork. Well, through holes in the ceiling where the light fixture wires go. They're everywhere, on windows, walls, floor, in my drink etc.

There must be tens of thousands up there and nothing kills them except a 10 lb hammer. Or Semtex. Harmless, but a nuisance until hoovered up.

Mother Nature is definitely not a happy lady this winter.

Saw yesterday that Vancouver, hosting the Olympics in a few days, doesn't have ENOUGH snow, and they are actually trucking it in and mfg. it.... weird.

Made a list for my once-a-month trip to Super Wal-Mart this AM...item I needed most and they have best price - they were out of....figures.

Big pot of lentil soup on the stove....and DD brought me a loaf of home-made bread........supper is gonna be good and make my tummy hum!

Born on this day....Laura Ingalls Wilder..1867-1957

Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder was an American author who wrote the Little House series of books based on her childhood in a pioneer family. She detailed her traveling, her travails…death and births…through 5 states. Laura attended regular school whenever possible. However, because of her family's frequent moves, she was largely self-taught. In 1882, at the age of fifteen, she received her teaching certificate.

Wilder was seventy-six years old when she finished the final book in her "Little House" series. Wilder once said the reason she wrote her books in the first place was to preserve the stories of her childhood for today's children, to help them to understand how much America had changed during her lifetime.

Quotes:

“I am beginning to learn that it is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all."

"The trouble with organizing a thing is that pretty soon folks get to paying more attention to the organization than to what they're organized for.”

"Once you begin being naughty, it is easier to go and on and on, and sooner or later something dreadful happens.”

No Super Bowl for me; I barely know which two teams are playing! So often when sports are being discussed on TV, my mind just tunes it out due to lack of interest.

bbg LOL-I've had to become a "tough old bird" in recent years! Overall I've had a good and in many respects easy life compared to many people, but there have been some tough periods and they seem to be coming faster and more frequently in recent years. But you do what you have to do. And I figure since we only come around once and that there are no second chances at life that I better make the most of this one. BTW, I'd say you qualify for the desingnation too!

As for the Mannings, it likely is hard in a way, but also exciting, to have the team from their home area as well as their son playing in the Super Bowl but on opposite sides.

bookdelle It's surprising to me not to be noticing the cold now until we go outside. In the other house you could tell easily how cold it was outside since it would also be cold inside. Some days I could only manage a few minutes in the kitchen or computer room at a time even with the heat cranked up. And I can believe your mother was beautiful as a young woman-it showed in that photo.

Time to head out to bring another, altho smaller, load of things here from the other house. Amazing how with all the things we've already brought over that there is still so much left there! It really didn't look all that crowded or cluttered before either, altho it's a big house and thus could hold a lot of stuff.

Gonna git some fishies

Back at you ladies tonight............oh wait, before I go....some lyrics. Below are the WORDS to the whistled tune starting/ending the Andy Griffith show.

Yes, for real. The whistling had lyrics!

Well, now, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
We may not get a bite all day, but don't you rush away.

What a great place to rest your bones and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade, a-settin' in the shade.

Whether it's hot, whether it's cool, oh what a spot for whistlin' like a fool.

What a fine day to take a stroll and wander by The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.

We'll have no need to call the roll when we get to The Fishin' Hole,
There'll be you, me, and Old Dog Trey, to doodle time away.

If we don't hook a perch or bass, we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
Or else pull up a weed to chaw, and maybe set and jaw.

Hangin' around, takin' our ease, watchin' that hound a-scratchin' at his fleas.

Come on, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.

My revised post. See if I can get this one to post.

If full search is turned on or doing anything for those of us who converted to the new store system I am not seeing any good results.

mainelady I am glad and relieved that you have made it through this move as well as you have. You must be one of those 'tough old birds.'

Think I'll have another round of fried grits and bacon. Then delay the chicken and dressing until dinner time.

O.K. now let's have a mini snit over the Super Bowl. LOL!!!
I imagine that even the Manning family may be vacillating a bit over who they want to win.

In the pricey but it works category--Cellex C less harch than retin A products. (thinking about the treatments, but I don't use anything..as the area softly and slowly crumples...)

mainelady - I agree re: snow. It has been good to get out and have the sun although the cold really gets to me.
Thank you for comment about my mother - as young woman she was gorgeous. My sister resembles her more than I do and DD resembles her father, I think.

Some questions:

How does someone pay by check without getting a warning from ebay that it shouldn't be done. I thought that was okay as long as you didn't offer it in your terms.

What can I do to liven up my tired eyes and lessen the bags under my eyes. 1. wear my glasses - anything else.

How do you remove age tone spots in folds (creases) of linen.

TIA

Good morning from Maine. It's partly cloudy and of course cold, but overall not a bad day, and we've had a nice stretch of weather the past few weeks overall.

I have a quiet day planned. Will see if it ends up that way as something usually seems to come up on days like this to change things. Lots of unpacking and sorting to do, and I want to make another trip to the old house to pick up some odds and ends (thankfully the major stuff is pretty much here now though). My son is stopping by at some point to move my recliner a bit-when the drapes were put up they cut off more of my view out the window than I like, so moving the chair will compensate for that. We also have some electical outlets we can't use right now as they have some kind of protective film inside, and neither DH nor I can manage to force the plugs thru it-hope he can manage that for us.

Plan to watch the Celtics game this afternoon and probably will watch part of the Superbowl this evening, altho since "my" team, the Patriots, isn't playing I'm not that interested. I will be cheering against the Colts though-I'm so tired of hearing about and watching Peyton Manning that I could scream! He's a great player and probably a nice enough guy, but seems like that's all I hear on the sports shows these days. Of course a few years ago it was all Tom Brady of the Patriots and probably others felt that way about him, but at least he wasn't in so many TV ads all the time.

That was some storm that hit the mid Atlantic area yesterday! I'm finding the photos interesting to see.

inmax It's odd-it used to be that DH was the one who was too warm when I had the thermostat set where I was comfortable. Now though, even though I'm on both a cancer med and coumadin, it's just the opposite. Since his stroke he seems to feel the cold a lot more, maybe partly because he's more sedentary.

And I can identify with you about not using email much to communciate with people on the board but mainly rely on posting to the board for that. There have been a handful of exceptions to that and I've enjoyed them, and I do enjoy getting emails from posters and should probably make more of an effort to initiate them with other posters too-maybe someday when life is a bit less hectic! I do have several non ebaying friends I email regularily as that is the only good way to stay in touch with them, but I've even had to curtail that a bit recently.

hihoelah Wow! Your car was really buried that day! I remember that storm well. There were cars abandoned on the road in front of our house for a couple of days before people were able to get them out again.

bookdelle Great pics, and you and your DD both looked terrific! And I see a real resemblance between you and your mother-a very pretty lady.

woa Glad you weren't seriously hurt.

bancheebabe, bookdelle, beth, hihoelah and other New Englanders -let's hope this next storm coming mid week misses us too! I like being able to walk around outside without boots of having to worry about driving. Lots of bare ground here now.

Hi HIHO-- quite the photo! the one I'll never forget was a super deep one we had once in APRIL--the day started out sunny, ended up snowing, and the busses stopped running as I went home, did not go to the rest of the route, I ended up trudging about 10 blocks uphill in knee deep snow without boots or heavy winter clothes. Luckily I was young and strong at the time.

inmax Yep! Refrigerate those left over grits and fry them when later. I really like the grits better than mush. But i grew up on mush. During the depression years when many of my brothers were still at home my mom often baked a 10" by 14" pan of mush for supper. We ate the mush like cereal.

Good morning from a very bright and sunny Indiana day where the glare off the snow is blinding. It's 9º right now and the view from my window is beautiful though I'm glad I'm not out there.

A bad start to the day when I fell over in the kitchen dragging the rubbish bin over with me. I badly twisted my right (good) knee and thought I was in serious trouble but it's just bruised.

Can you imagine - both legs out of commission and just one working arm left of what I was born with? Reminds me of the Oliver Stone movie "The Hand"!

Someone withdrew a bid overnight on one of our items reducing it's current price by $100. They gave as their reason "entered wrong amount" What they don't realise is, it is against ebay rules to do so without entering another amount.

Today the Colts play the saints in the Superbowl and obviously we want the Colts to win. But as the saints have done so much to help Nawlins after katrina and the Colts let them have use of their stadium, it's more like a family affair so we won't be too upset if the Saints win.

Well, I'm sitting safely in my office chair listing now so hopefully won't fall out of that!

Hiho, are you sure that's your car? It has a California plate! ;-)

Nice picture mim.

Good Morning from scenic Lake Sunapee Region where the daytime temps remain in the teens.

I hope oceana and BAM are NOT among those without power. The weather map this morning did not look promising. It appears another storm is making its way across the country and headed for the same area - maybe a bit further north.

I guess I will be doing errands on Monday and Tuesday just to be on the safe side.

B!B!G! I love hot brothy soup for breakfast, especially if it is homemade chicken soup. Since the SO usually skims all the fat off of it, it is flavorful and light. I also like miso soup and have little single serving packets that come in handy.

hi I was living in Cambridge, MA when that storm hit. I was home in NJ to attend my uncle's funeral when my father said it was more important for me to get back to school. I made it thru NY, Ct and MA just as the interstates closed. A parking space was vacated in front of my building just as I arrived and I slid into place. Little did we antipated that the city would be closed for a week! [It is one of my best memories of Cambridge}.

hello again!

woa You are having the snow we are missing here! Although it has snowed up in the mountains, this year in the valley it seems to have snowed rather little...and today was a balmy 50 degrees and the snow (which usually does not melt for another month or so) has almost all disappeared from the yard! Since I am now having leg problems, due to the bum knee, I know exactly what you mean about slipping on snow when getting in vehicles, so I am doubly glad it has melted. Even without the snow, I have a hard time heaving myself up into the trucks and trying not to bend/reinjure/cause pain etc.....

Not a good sign.

I've heard about loving pioneer couples, who after months snowed into their sod homes out on the prairie, would go literally nuts. Most cabin fever campfire stories usually revolve around one killing and/or eating the other.

Mind you this took the hardy pioneers extended MONTHS. Here in Briguy world, we're closing in on that level after only a matter of hours.

First she yelled at me about the fumes (stamp watermarking). So I had to stop that. Then it was "turn down the banjo music, you're driving me insane".

Trying hard to make it through this trying time, I bucked up the courage to slide up to her all masculine like, leaning over her with that one eye cocked at a sexy angle thing I've learned.....and asked her what she wanted to do for Valentine's day.

[she speaks slow and methodically] "I......want to go to the store.......buy one of those big $10 chocolate bunnies......lock myself in the bedroom with it and a knife.....and EAT the whole damn thing......until I barf."

O-kaaaaaaaaaaaay [backs away slowly - and quickly hides all sharp kitchen items]

Dupo _ I will try to explain a bit. If an illegal, let's say Joe Smith, wants a job. He may "borrow" his cousin John's SS# and ID to get one. Or he may find someone who sells false documents. He then gets the job, goes to work everyday and the employer never knows he has hired an illegal. When Joe gets laid off, however, he will not risk getting involved with the government, so does not file for unemployment. The employer still reports the job as gone, but Joe doesn't get counted as unemployed bny anyone.

Instead I'm inside, nice and cozy in a small enclosed room,....watermarking stamps. LOL! For those of you non philatelists, thats pouring out quick evaporating lighter fuel to dip them in. Pour some more, check watermarks. Pour some more, check a few more watermarks.....

For some reason I'm getting giddy now.....

Wonder where the tipping point is? You know, the level of fumes in the air, needed to blow out the windows by flicking a cigarette lighter? Sounds like a MythBusters episode. Hmmmmm. 'flick' 'flick'........not yet

The extra fridge is now in the basement, several more chairs, a couple of small stands and lamps and several bags and boxes of stuff have been brought in here, the rest of the drapes are in the windows, a nice clock that belonged to my mother has been hung on the wall, and everyone has gone home. Now I have to find places to put more stuff and things are all over the place, but I can take my time doing it all and am enjoying a few hours of relative peace and quiet for a change!

Zach and his mother arrived this morning part way thru the process, and he got another conducted tour thru the house-last time he was here there was only a little furniture so it looked very different to him. He had made me a large "picture" with finger paints and I had put it on the refrigerator in the kitchen, and he was tickled to see that too.

wellington Thanks for the concern, and while we don't have a carbon monoxide dectector yet I've added to to my list of things to get when I go shopping the first of the week. My cat's problem is chronic, and while unpleasant I've learned to deal with it. I think my problem was caused by a combination of meds that tend to have that side effect and aggravated by a poor choice of what I had for a late meal last night and being overtired, while DH has this problem now and then.

The air exchange system that was installed earlier this week should ensure that we get plenty of fresh air, but I'll open a couple of windows this afternoon to be on the safe side-don't want to take any chances!

Born on this day....RIP TORN...1931

Elmore Rual Torn, Jr. (born February 6, 1931) — known as Rip Torn — is an Emmy Award-winning, Oscar-nominated American actor of stage, screen and television.

Being given the name "Rip" is a family tradition of men in the Torn family for several generations. It was given to him by his father, who was also called Rip; although as a young child and teenager he was referred to as "Skippy."

He has constantly been in demand as a character actor, in supporting, second lead and occasional lead roles. His best performance on film came in "Pay Day," and he was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for "Cross Creek." Most of Torn's roles have been in drama, though he is adept in comedy.

Torn won six consecutive Emmy nominations for the role, winning once for Best Supporting Actor in a comedy series in 1996. He helped his cousin, Oscar-winner Sissy Spacek, to make her way as an actress.

Quotes:

“When I grew up, people said, 'You'll never be the man your dad was.' And I said, 'Gee, I hope not.'”

Garry Shandling always said to me,“Don’t get mad, get funny.” It changed my life.”

"Don't ever humiliate a man. If you're gonna have to dress him out, you take him aside and do it that way. That's the one thing I don't like about Hollywood: They go in for public humiliation. You shouldn't do that to a man.”

"I think most actors are shy. I really do. The greatest actors can disappear. I had friends call me the Blend-In Man.”

aeg- Thanks about DD. I was going to send that calendar to my DS & DBIL because they shop there when they visit but then I realized that they aren't readers or literary people so.... I thought you'd have fun with it.

banchee- DD was definitely there - Newport is only 2 1-2 hours away. I think it was nice for a couple who won awards for work with another theater company acknowledged working with Suzanne or her as a mentor etc.
It wasn't a banquet- it was at the Palace Theater with some entertainment from various '09 productions. Awards are divided into Professional and Community theaters. We have always been in the Professional category which means some limited use of Equity actors, paying actors etc. But some community theaters do very good productions also - more musicals.
One theater company that also had a lot of nominations and wins is Weathervane in Whitefield - where the H is Whitefield.... someone said near Canadian border.

Coffee is a big issue here now. wray has decided that he wants perked coffee. He bought an old aluminum pot with mixed results. Stopped at a church thrift this morning and they were having a $5 bag sale - found an electric percolator ccmplete with cord - so now wray has a new toy to play with.
The one and only time I was in Starbucks was when I was in SF in June. There is one here but not anywhere I frequent. The big coffee shops here are Dunkin Donuts. I don't go out of my way to buy coffee but we do make a lot here at home.

dupo, i remember 1 time on board ship, underway, we had a rookie who went to make a fresh pot of coffee for us in the sonar shack. we went to get a cup & spit it out fast! he had gone to the wrong spigot to get the water & it was salt water! he never made that mistake again!

Thanks Michael It's just irritating.

Good morning to all from Dupo, Illinois where the sun is shining, but it is cold outside.

One of my small bird feeders is lying on the ground in the snow. A squirrel probably tried to get into it and snapped the string. That's easily fixed ... I'll replace the broken string with sturdy wire.

During the day I want my coffee. Most evenings I make a nice comforting pot of hot tea. Yes, I put hot tea in the 'comfort' category.

DH used to talk about how in his USAF days, even guys who didn't like coffee would be in line at the coffee pot. If you were stationed at an AFB in one of the northern States during winter, a steaming hot cup of coffee was great for warming hands when working on the flight line, and the steam coming off the cup warmed your face.

Bob, give me a HOTTEA any day!

I'd better get showered prior to going out.

Oh, pictures thanks to Wiki.

furtima, I hope your eye gets better soon.

Ann, good to hear dad is home - now to organise people around him!

One quick addition to that list is the word verge. It is a type of escapement used in older clocks and watches. The normal escapement for clocks is an anchor which is literally shaped like an inverted anchor. A verge is two square plates (pallets) which alternately contact the crown wheel to control the energy release.

An escapement controls how the power is released by the main drive, a spring or a weight. Basically, every time you hear a clock tick, it is one of the anchor or verge points being released by a tooth in a wheel.

The oldest clock in England was the Dover castle verge and foliot clock built in about 1348. Whilst in hospital recovering from my injuries I built a model of it using cardboard, pencils and string!

It actually worked for 2 days until the cardboard chewed itself up.

Here is an anchor escapement:

And a verge escapement:

Now you know what the term verge fusee means.

Sorry to put all this info here, but there isn't a horological board!

dadgummit, all this coffee talk has forced me to make a rare second cup!

furty, i have been addicted to sodas since i was a teenager but always diet, regular 1s are too sweet for me (i don't like overly sweet thingies). when people would comment about my heavy drinking, i tell them i do not touch alcohol, never have smoked, never used drugs, so i have 1 vice!

My Grannie let me have coffee with lots of milk and sugar from the time I was about 8. Finally when I got in high school my parents let me drink it at home. Of course when i worked it was several cups a day, but as the years go by that has slacked off. One cup of decaf in the am is it for me now. It is brewed in a small 4 cup Mr. Coffee. Sodas are my staple.

DH has sold a few Derrydale Press books. This appears to be a good one with the card association. He says he would start it at $400.00 on a 10 day auction.

i started drinking coffee in the navy (coffee drinking there is in the navy regs somewhere, it has to be lol). my parents always had a pot brewed, my mom still does. iusually have a cup or 2 in the ma (always instant, too impatient to brew). sometimes though the coffee mood will attack at any time. coffee, tea, hot chocolate & lemonade are free in the shamu employee cafeterias but the closest 1 to my work area is a 5-minute walk & don't have time to go there except on lunch break

I see we're talking coffee :)I prefer a milder coffee than Starbuck's. I think their coffee shops are usually attractive and enjoy a latte from there, but don't go out of my way to go there. There are many many attractive coffee shops now, both chain and individually owned. I like the privately run ones the best, that are perhaps combined with a book shop or art, or crafts... coffee shops are nice places to sit and read, or visit with a friend. Out and about many convenience stores like Quicktrip and PDQ have delicous reasonable priced "gourmet" coffee, and we make a point to stop at them after our coffee cups from home run out. I have a knock-box at work, but nowhere near as attractive as that one...

Hope all the folks with snow are being careful and are comfy and well supplied at home.

Lol on sneaking coffee INmax--coffee was for grown-ups at our house too. I didn't learn to drink it until I was a freshman in college and had five early morning classes.

mnewviille--ahahaha, at least you didn't call it "that brown drug" lol

WOA-- funny about the mose, and thank you much for watch list, I am copying it. Fusee was one of the terms I was wondering about.

Dad went home yesterday. DH was there early, and waited a long time for release to happen, as it was supposed to at 10 am. He finally had to leave for work, and DBIL and middle Sis took Dad home. We are going ove there this morning to see how things are going and if they need anything. Younger DB stayed ove last night.

Welington--ahh, sorry, I had forgotten you needed more proof of injury, I was thinking it was a newer problem.

Ruth, rhododendrons, camellias, wonderful! thanks for posting that. Maybe we can retire to the west coast...:) After we win the lottery ;)

Bookdelle--fantastic about DD ! Nice for her to get the recognition, what a lot she does! Thanks for the calendar, we got a good laugh out of it :)

Gotta go, BBL :)

51 and cloudy here in Fla Panhandle. My eye still a little tender, but not tearing as much.

Chores to do, but donwanna. The electrician came Thurs and power is restored to the plugs and switches in my bedroom, so I can read at night again. The problem was the plug in the bathroom, loose connection.

Missing listing on ebay, but have no inventory here. I haven't even looked at or bought books in more than six months.

Good morning from snowy NJ. We are not in the path of the worst of the storm, but looks like about 6+ inches have fallen. I don't need to go anywhere today, so I will just enjoy being snowbound. One of the advantages of living in a condo is that the snow removal is handled. It's still snowing but the weather folks say it is supposed to taper off now.

BANCHEE all kinds of hats, but no baseball ones. At least not yet. One more place to look.

I'll get to that later today.

I start back at teh Census on February 22 for about 8-10 weeks this time, then back again in August. Meantime, I am at school nearly full time this month, but winter vacation is week of Feb 15 so I will get one week off between.

Hi Laurie, I've got a spare mouse here. Last seen scurrying into the basement followed by Dixie.

I'll have more lists like that when I get time, one for the Victorian tools used to make and repair watches and one for clocks.

I could just copy and paste from the internet but it's more of a challenge and a good mental exercise to do it from my head.

I'll say one thing for Ginger, she knows I'm a great survivor and will never allow myself to get into a dangerous situation, so doesn't worry about me.

Mind you, she doesn't read the book board often! ;-)

MAIENELADY - Do you have a Carbon Monoxide detector?

If you all had upset and did not all eat the same thing, and animals have different digestion times anyway, That is one of the sypmtoms for Carbon Monoxide poisioning.

Might be worth checking out.

BANCHEE - Yes it is to do with the car accident and should be reimbursed

WOA - Great list . .
Thanks

Mouse broke at this computer in Mom's resource center and I have to use a trac(?) ball. I HATE IT> Awkward bad shape, yad yada.

Good morning everyone. Hope the snow storm has missed most of you.

banchee, we were coming out of restaurant yesterday morning. Car pulled into handicap parking. Younger looking woman driver. Passenger couldn't get door open to get out. Went over to see if I could helps. Thinking all the time why doesn't other person help? Then I saw that poor woman was trying to get her cane out so she could get out.

mainelady, hope day gets better, and you can enjoy a nice rest this wk-end. Amazing the drive and energy you have.

Grew up in IN. with the strange time changes. Mother went to work before I left for school. She was always so pleased that I cleaned the kitchen up every morning. Why? Because I finished drinking the pot of coffee, and wasn't supposed to drink coffee. So washed the pot for her.

Admire anyone that gets out and keeps going. Only thing, it reaches the point where it might cause so much worry and concern for the person that lives/cares for them.

Pat, good for you and what a jerk his son appears to be. On the other hand, maybe he couldn't walk or something?

mainelady, I've warned you before about saving money by eating cat food! ;-)

As for frustration, 35 years of paralysis has taught me infinite patience in most situations. Not with rude people, but in situations I can't do anything about without help.

Good morning from Maine. Partly cloudy and cold, but thankfully no snow. Sounds like a big mess in the mid Atlantic coastal area though.

This morning did not get off to a good start here. Let's just say that all of us, including the cat, had various forms of stomach problems starting at about 5 AM! All seem ok now, just one of those things.

In an hour or so we're going over to the old house to get things ready for my sister's grandson and DH and my oldest DS to the apartment refrigerator here to the basement (that means emptying out the freezer section before they move it) as well as some move a few other odds and ends of furniture and also do a few projects here, like hanging the drapes I'd had shortened and picked up yesterday.

Yesterday afternoon was busy too-we were gone for almost 5 hours doing various errands and also picking up some more things from the other house. But after everyone leaves about noon today I plan to take the rest of the day more or less off and tomorrow as well-I know I've been overdoing big time.

Add me to those who've never been to a Starbucks. Of course, since I don't like coffee that's not surprising!

bbg Glad you've gained back at least a little weight and are feeling better.

dupo Glad your mother is doing better and also that your big book sale ended up well.

bancheebabe Nice you were able to help that man out-too bad you couldn't have given his son a kick in the bu__ at the same time!

woa Must be frustrating-hope help arrived soon in each case.

Time to get moving-time slips away so quickly!

I was getting into my car at the PO last week and saw an elderly man with his arm in a cast attempting to get out of the passenger seat of a very low car. His feet kept going out from under him. I put my foot in front of his feet so he could get some traction and then let him use my shoulder as a brace to lift himself out of the seat.........

............In the meanwhile, his able bodied son,l who was behind the wheel, did not even attempt to either 1) assist his father or 2) take the ^%$# package to the counter. Am I missing something????????
