Kansas took care of Texas, without problems. Tennessee faces Vandy tonight. Things are getting very interesting in college basketball. Who will win the ACC? Tech? Florida State? Maryland? Clemson? (who is missing from this picture?)

Good mornin'!! I'm still feeling good about the Saints win. The South's gonna rise again. Maybe.

Jred, I feel the same way about Oprah. I know all about her good works but anyone who takes the American public for as much as she has should be doing good works.

Plume, give yourself a kick start. If you know what that is. :-)

For VT: !!!!

While a farm girl was milking a cow, a bull tore across the meadow toward her. The girl did not stir, but continued milking.

Observers, who had run to safety, saw to their amazement that the bull stopped dead within a few yards of the girl, turned round and walked sadly away.

"Weren't you afraid?" asked everyone.

"Certainly not," said the girl. "I happened to know this cow is his mother-in-law."

Good morning folks! Temps have climbed up to a respectable 22 this ayem, but the sun could show her pretty little face for a minute.

Bama, cute picture of Howard, what a pink mouth. Your current painting situation reminds me of an incident I experienced back in my painting days. I was on a job in a brownstone on Beacon Hill painting with a crew of guys. The lady of the house had beautiful antiques throughout the whole house. She also had a thing for expensive oriental rugs in every room of the house. We had our crew of three regular painters and one extra fill in from Southie. We covered all the furnishings and the floors with drop clothes. Here we are painting away while the lady of the house was out for the day, or so we thought. Seems the new guy didn't pay attention and let his drop cloth get all scrunched up exposing the rug. Yep, he spilled paint all over the oriental rug right at the same time the lady of the house was walking up the front steps. The very moment he spilled the paint her cat was walking through the room as she was walking through the door. He picked up the cat and smeared her into the paint on the floor as if she was the one who spilled the paint. The lady fell for it, the cat was off to the groomers, and we didn't get thrown off the job. I had to admit it was the best thinking on your feet I have ever witnessed.

The dooferati's 2-6" turned out to be a dusting of snow. The cold front did show up and it is a not so quite balmy 13 degrees. Last year, at this time, we had played 3 rounds of golf, in the 60's. None so far this year, and no sight of anything close to a reasonable temperature for teeing off.

One trouble of winter, is that you get so much time to see things that need to be done. I will be insulating the garage, adding storage shelving in the rafters of same, eliminating disposable items on the garage shelves, painting the garage doors on the inside, adding seals to the outside of the garage doors, etc. WAIT! It is too dang cold to do those things, as they require open garage doors. How soon is April?

Morning. Feeling under the weather, today; so is DH. Not sure what the day will hold, as both SIL's may want to get out and do something. Thinking it would be wisest to conserve energy, and take nap before they call around ten.

Bama, love the picture of Howard; Puff has the same reaction to menthol that Sophiedot does. I rub a wee bit onto his stufed toy of choice, and it's good for at least 30 minutes of cat happiness.

Stay warm, safe and dry; we're awaiting more rain. *Bah* BBL.

Hey Y'ALL! I got as much "out" stuff done as possible today. We have another week of snow ahead of us. There are seven counties, including mine, that have really been slammed and it is not letting up. Tonight and tomorrow is not expected to be as bad as last week. Be happy for small blessings, I guess.

T-GAL, did you mean to not answer my question about where you're going next? :-)

Hi from calm before the storm NJ -- looks like we're not going to dodge the next snowstorm, predicting 6 to 12 inches. And the Virginia/DC area is expecting another foot of snow.

Bama, poor furkids! Their routine is really being upset -- not only strangers in their house, but things moved around, and strange noises and smells.

T-gal, is all well with the motor home? And how is DH?

ginny...I agree...That is why I keep my hair cut real short...As long as it keeps my head from getting sunburned, I'm okay...Thomas' teeth may be stained but they are sharp and he knows how to use them...Never try to rub his belly while he is taking a nap...He doesn't like it...The bite marks of the back of my hand are healing up nicely.

gadda - my best friend in high school, claire, was also given huge doses of tetracycline for something stained her teeth, but she still has them.

teeth are more important than hair. hair is vastly overrated.

What a cute photo of Howard...As a kitten, Thomas was given large doses of tetracycline to treat feline infectious anaemia...It stained his teeth...This is why he seldom smiles for the camera...We are just happy that the tetracycline (and a blood transfusion) saved his life...I can't imagine not having him around.

I have plenty of mentholatum in various pots and potions. Herself the Obscure has finally come out to say hi and eat, but she now knows where tomorrow's hidey place is. She's tried it out for some hours now. Poor furkids.
Posted by   ( ) on Feb-08-10 at 16:54:06 PST   Listings
i'm thinking that for around $4, bama could buy a jar of mentholatum and be sophie's heroine forevah. cheaper than shrimp.
Posted by   ( ) on Feb-08-10 at 16:38:29 PST   Listings
Or he could just be politicking for some shrimp. Creamed, on toast points, garnished with red caviar.

It's little Sophiedot who needs comforting. Is she still hiding? Perhaps a creme de menthe parfait would approximate menthol.

bama does not. She's wiser. The vet wants to schedule him for a teeth cleaning soon. It will be his second visit for that and they'll knock him out beforehand. All I have to do is catch him and put his butt in a carrier. All I have to do....

evening, y'all. i'll bet new orleans was beyond wild last night. i'm feeling lighthearted myownself.

my favorite commercial was the one about the longhorn and the clydesdale. the most scared i ever was for my horse was when we were working a herd of watusi /longhorn crosses. the mamas put their babies in a little pack and then backed in against them leaving them protected by a ring of those horns which they were all shaking at us. i bet they are tough on lions. a couple of other murderous uneven tempered breeds are the santa gertrudis and anything else with brahman in it. (the old ranchers i know who own them pronounce the word bray'mer, and so do i out of respect. and they are the most beautiful breed of cattle, if not the nicest.) no wonder the people in india let the brahmans do whatever they want to: they can't stop them and above all else they don't want to make 'em mad.

...And the painters have left for the day. They got a lot done in the short time they were here. The furkids hid under the bed in my room but at one point a highly perturbed Howard made an appearance and LOUDLY proclaimed his dissatisfaction with the whole thing. Tomorrow they'll both have to hide somewhere else so I've made them a tent by throwing blankets over a table in this room that go all the way to the floor (no painting in here). Once they get that single wall in the big den done the cats can hide under the sofa in there and have access to their boxes in the utility room. Courage, kids.

I meant to delete that last sentence, not applicable to pellet guns.
Posted by   ( ) on Feb-08-10 at 09:08:22 PST   Listings
Vanessa - Generally, eBay doesn't allow listings for BB guns, pellet guns, air rifles, or air pistols because they generally shoot a metal projectile, and they're considered weapons in many states. However, having said that, listings are allowed for airguns that aren't considered air rifles, and you can use the word "BB" to describe the ammunition for a BB gun.

You can use the words “Gas Blow Back” or “GBB” to describe a replica firearm with that feature.

Boy, lots of folks in the area are heading to the Olympics. I talked to someone yesterday who is leaving Wednesday; he has tickets to the opening ceremonies and all sorts of events. He's sweating the opening ceremonies because they usually include synchronized audience participation. He said "I just know I'll be the one holding up the red flag while the rest of the stadium is holding up with the white flag." LOL.

Vancouver is having one of the warmest winters on record [cannot remember the exact stat]; they have been trucking in snow for the venues closest to the city. I gather that Whistler has plenty of snow so no problems there.

Three in a row -- I'm off to the corner to try to unsnarl my checking account.

I'm glad it was the MH and not T-belle what's broke! Tow trucks for those things are incredibly expensive, I'm told.

Yes, a furious cat can move faster than the human eye, I know that. Even old blind Bella could disappear when she heard the tiny sound of the pill bottle cap, no matter how careful I was--and I mean disappear. Once I made it back just in time to see a grey pencil tail whipping behind the drapes, fwip! but usually she just de-materialized.

I have never seen anything like that one lonnnnng TD the Saints made--OMG, so exciting! Mostly football seems to be little puddles of action divided by half-hours of blather, graphics and commercials, but today was swell. Hooray for Roussie and her team!

Jersey: Have you tried pill pockets -- they help a bit if your cat is a chow hound. It's astonishing how fast an angry cat can move.

Good evening (I guess considering) ~~
we are still in SPI, as DH found a broken belt somewhere this ayem, and no one works on Sunday here ...
So it was a putzy day, went to the SB party alone (he still feels worse than ever) and came home half-time to keep him company (and bring some food, which was great, home to him)
Hopefully, we'll be on the road tomorrow ... something, something (I can't remember) and the creek don't rise

OK then! Having just watched a beautiful National Anthem in which every visible Saint had his hand over his heart, and in which every visible Colt did not--plus a coach whose eyes kept watching the clock--I know I made the right choice. Tsk.

Why is this CAT all over me? I sat down to watch the N.A. being sung and get teary, as usual, and there was Fitts who hasn't spoken to me all day, mew mew mew waah waah mow mow nyaaah wah mow. Rolling around, tapping me without and then WITH claws, finally a bite and shake of my hand, is-it-dead-yet style! Maybe he wanted to watch a different channel?

Jaxie, poor Jack! I can sympathize on trying to get pills in him. When our Fudge was losing weight for unknown reasons (she was 17 at the time) and the vet wanted to run tests because it might be her thyroid and all I'd have to do is give her a pill every day for the rest of her life, I said no. Knowing how traumatized she was the few times we did have to give her pills, I knew it would not be worth it.

Rosie, you are so right about the change in routine trauma. Fudge was very indignant with changes. When DD (who was her original "mommy") went off to college, Fudge used to leave her hairballs on her bed. Eventually she became my cat. Anytime I went away (even if DH or DS was left at home to care for her), I would get the cold shoulder when I got back. She made sure you knew she was ignoring you.

Maybe make a purrito? (wrap him in a big towel, all legs inside) Have DH hold it tight at the shoulders so no paw gets through and you pull back Jack's upper jaw till the lower jaw opens; pop, push, snap shut and hold for the gulp.

It's not fun, but it's less bloody. I wish cats were more like dogs, and you could just poke the pill in a ball of Velveeta.

Rosy: Yeah, I think he's pretty pooped. I feel bad locking him in the bathroom, but, it's quiet in there.

He's on four meds -- pain killer, antibiotic and two that I cannot remember. He's dreadful to pill; we had quite the rodeo this morning!

He'll be on special food for the rest of his days [same stuff Ajax ate]; I guess the point of the special food is it dilutes the urine -- odd, eh? He still had crystals in his urine the night before he came home so they left the catheter in and flushed him out for another 8 hours.

Gotta get. Later!

Oh, what a touching picture! Poor little guy, clutching his dad's sock. He does look exhausted, but I'm sure part of that is the horrors of being boarded at the vet's and the procedure.

Do they think all the crystals are gone? Did they give him an acidifier or something to continue with?

Early-Halloween: there's nothing any of us can do. Ebay is concerned only with the money it makes, and really doesn't care if buyers get stiffed. The number of fake artifacts, antiques, art - you name it - on Ebay is appalling. Buyers - beware. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably IS. You can't warn anyone - that is considered Auction Interference, and could get you in hot water sooner than the seller with the fake merchandise. I'm sorry; I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but take it from someone who's already banged the gong about the same subject and gotten nowhere ... you're better off walking away, and forgetting what you know.

Counterfeits on eBay

What can be done to stop counterfeit antiques on eBay? Right now ive856 is selling a fake China Scenic marble- if it were real it would be worth 5- 10,000, an obvious incentive to try to fake one. RIGHT NOW BIDDING HAS ALREADY PASSED $2,000 ON THIS CURRENT AUCTION!!!

I own one and have personally examined many- the one being offered is too lose in its painting technique. The originals were tighter and finer. The 'daisy' motifs at the poles would have more 'petals'. All horizontal break lines would be straighter and thinner, because these lines were not hand-painted free-form, but rather formed by placing the marble on a turning pottery wheel, turning the marble and touching a brush to create a perfect sharp line. The sky in the background would be fainter and would gradate more, lighter towards the bottom.

Seller says his in worn condition, but in fact no china scenics are in as clean condition as his- in reality, his is just sloppy, not worn. All these faults are clear in a famous book about China Scenic marbles.

THE BIGGEST GIVEAWAY IS NO CHINA SCENIC WAS EVER 2 INCHES!

FOR GLOBAL ANTIQUES INFO USE

THE ANTIQUE BOARD'S "CLICK ME" POST

The link below will take you to a page of links containing information on art, antiques, shipping resources, paid appraisal services and pages about antiques of all description. If you're unable to find what you need, post a question on the board. Don't post your real email address.

* HOW TO PUT YOUR PICTURE HERE *

FOR NEW POSTERS - We can't see your image if it's still inside your own computer, and most prefer that you not ask to send pictures by email attachments. It's easier than ever to post images on this board...it's just different from posting an auction picture using eBay's server. If your internet provider doesn't give you room to store images (most do) you can use the image host at THIS LINK. Photobucket is a free permanent image host, and all you need to do is register a new account. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Once your image is uploaded and you can see it, right click on it, select Properties, and you'll see the URL (the internet address) the host has assigned to your image. Copy that URL and paste it in the message window here. The address will appear on the board as a blue clickable link we can use to see your item.
Simple as pie.

Describe the size of the item and any marks on it. This will greatly help us help you. Please don't ask how much something is worth...we don't know and cannot guess. It's worth only what a bidder is willing to pay for it. That's all. Keep checking back; it could take up to 6 hours for someone familiar with your item to see your question and leave an answer for you. If we don't respond, it's not because we don't want to help - it's because we can't.

Morning all---I've been gone for a while. We went to Laughlin, NV for a few days. Free flight and room. Didn't come back broke but didn't come back big winners either. It was fun. We had a wonderful day of nice slow rain when we got back. I'm hoping my little Royal Empress tree is still alive. I should know in a few days as it was 65 yesterday.

One of my Yorkies (my little shadow) was completely hoarse when we got home. Poor little guy. This may interfere with our small Super Bowl party. I have a long shopping list of food, paper, etc. As the local Wally World Neighborhood Market (translation: grocery store only) is open 24/7, I will probably go over very soon. Then, clean house, do my nails, shovel the driveway, etc.

Dan it is obviously australian folk art because it is made using a medium that is exclusively found in that country.
That doesn't mean it is a rarity, probably was made in large numbers and available quite reasonably. I recall such things made in the south with real pine tree bark, moss and other such things.
Same kinda thing.

Y'all have fun. You missed a party on my back porch. Sorta. I opened the back door to take something to the big trash can and came face to face with the biggest possum I've ever seen. His head was the size of a football. I eased back into the house. He stood his ground. I pushed the door open again with great trepidation. I mean, he could have gone either way. He opted to leave the porch. He had been eating from Abbey and Kaney's dish. I used to bring it in at night but thought maybe one of them was visiting after dark and had become a very messy eater. I feel a little guilty for taking away his food source but he is not a welcome visitor.

Jaxie, as in Charley who still runs and hides in the basement when the doorbell rings and who sometimes seems to forget he knows me if I leave the house for more than an hour? :~) Somehow I can't picture him performing in public (but I know he'd chase the red dot!)

Jersey: What?!!...you aren't going to traipse through a pet store with Charley to get him socialized? LOL. I cannot even imagine doing that. Dunno why that made me think of this, but, years ago I seemed to be on the same early morning time schedule as a young man. I would often see him driving his car with a white cat perched on the back of his seat, seemingly happy as a clam.

There was a little ditty in the exam room at the vet that said something like "Cats are smarter than dogs -- you will never see 8 cats harnessed together to pull a sled through the snow." Too true.

Off again to earn some cash to pay for that smoking hot vet bill. Ouch.

I was just reading an on-line article about our "snow"; apparently the air is so dry that the snow evaporated before it hit the ground. Not too far south of us, though, they got lots of snow and wind.

Funny article in our paper today about cats going through obstacle courses: http://www.northjersey.com/community/pets/83699647_Making_cats_jump_through_hoops.html

Unlike with dogs, you "lead" cats through with either a toy or a laser dot. I was thinking Charley might like doing that until I read the last paragraph: "The only preparation you need is that your cat has to be comfortable in strange places. Get it used to going out, for example to pet stores that allow animals." No, don't think so. ;~)

Morning.

Bamaj: What a sad story.

Is anyone here impacted by all the snow? I just looked at a photos slideshow on msnbc. Wow. That's a lot of snow!

We are heading to a friend's house for a Super Bowl party; should be fun. I am impartial about the outcome -- do not really care who wins; a friend played for the Saints a million years ago so I'm leaning that way.

Bama, that's so sad. The news has been nothing but bad here, too. Earlier this week, a distraught grandmother killed her five year old and five month old grandchildren with a shotgun, before taking her own life with it. Her husband found them; I can't imagine what he and the children's parents are going through.

I read about the shooting yesterday...

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/02/06/alabama.student.killed/index.html?hpt=T2

We are hosting the Superbowl party this year...I guess I will be forced to watch some of it...I am not a football person...We will be watching it on our new LED tv hooked up to our new surround sound system...Maybe that will make it more enjoyable.

Scattered rain showers today.

Details are sketchy, jred. Apparently it was intentional. The shooter smuggled in a gun and had selected his target. 9th graders. They've only named the victim, not the shooter because he's a juvenile.

How awful! How did this happen? If not intentional?

Man, was I out of the loop on local news yesterday. Just opened the paper to find out there was a fatal shooting at a local middle school about 1:30 yesterday afternoon. A 14-yr-old boy was shot dead by another 14-yr-old boy.

Chilly, windy and rainy here. I see Washington DC is paralyzed. I know that's usually the case, but this time it's because of snow. Gone to pick up SuperBowl supplies. Serious nachos and hot dogs. Go Saints

Good morning from cloudy NJ -- it's very odd, the weather map is showing that it is snowing here but there isn't a flake to be seen. Meanwhile, there's a ton of snow in the DC area -- I spoke very briefly with DD while we were driving to the hockey game last night, she was at her ambulance company (she was Duty Officer yesterday, but said it was 'all hands on deck'). Afraid to call her today.
