Tom - there's still plenty of ways to play the comps game in LV. A gal named Jean Scott aka The Frugal Gambler and her husband were making a couple $100 a day and getting free food for many years - probably still doing it. The LV newpapers, magazines and such have casino ads offering lots of giveaways targeting the locals - like coupons for 2:1 payouts up to $5 on blackjack bets; $20 in coins for a $10 buyin and you just have to put the $20 through the machine 1 time; etc.

The off strip casinos also have unreal food offers - Binions offered a post midnight 1 pound T-bone steak dinner for $1.99 up until a few years ago. Another joint has a big cup of shrimp coctail and a 10 ounce beer for 99 cents.... stuff like that is still easy to find.

It was about 1986 that I first learned that some Video Poker games in Nevada could be beat and we studied everything we could get our hands on to perfect our game (OK, I studied and then taught Carole). The casinos were making a ton of money on Video poker - people who didn't study the game played intuitively and were getting a payout of 85-90% on their wagers. We were getting 102-105% payout with optimal play back then and the hosts loved us since they got paid/bonused based on our play and nobody could track our winnings back then. If we put $3,000 a day through the machines we were comped as players who were losing $450 a day. Playing $1.25 per hand for 4-5 hours per day each (which we thoroughly enjoyed doing) got us free rooms & food, limos to and from the airport, show tix, etc.

By the late 1990s advanced computer technology gave the big casinos the ability to track a player's overall winnings/losses and modify their comp practices. the hosts still love us but the casinos bagan changing the payout structure on most machines to keep the optimum payout under 100%.

Bud i know a lot of cops that hit Vegas years ago and they told ne how cheap it was. And how to milk the comp. I really don't recall any of it, but if there is an angle to save money, cops will find it. lol

Still saw some greats. Was never my scene for gambling or shows years back, getting older I might like to see some good shows. On the topic Tommy and I were in the process of gettin George Carlin tickets when he passed. I turned Tommy on to Carlin some years back and we talked about seeing him for quite a while. I might consider going to see Robin Willaims with him? I really want to see Led Zeppelin if Plant would stop being an arse and tour. Tickets would prolly be $1000 each to god knows what. But Mill knows that is one thing I want to do with Tommy. We both love LZ

We saved up our loose change for "gambling money" on those trips in the 1970s :) Rooms were under $25 a night at Caesar's or Harrah's if you had a player's card and our 10 cent to 25 cent slot machine & video poker machine play got most of our food comped. We'd bring maybe $150 "entertainment" money for the whole 5-6 day trip :)
Posted by   ( ) on Feb-08-10 at 18:26:50 PST   Listings
Tom - we didn't make our first trip to Las Vegas until 1979 and most of the "old timers" were gone from the scene by then. For a few years before that we were driving to South Lake Tahoe (Nevada side) a couple of times a year (15 hours driving time each way) and staying at Harrah's or Caesar's Palace. In S. Lake Tahoe we saw Dean Martin, Vic Damone, Frank Sinatra, Lawrence & Gorme, Don Rickles, and others.

By 1979 LV was turning to "family tourism" after the city had shaken most of its gangland ties. We stayed at the original MGM Grand (now Bally's) for years and when Treasure Island opened in 1993 we moved our trips to there - the comps they offered low stakes players were unparalleled.

Bud did you go to Vegas back in it's hay day? I'm not much of a gambler, and between my back and knees, walking around to see teh sites don't make it a place easy for me to see. But if I could see the old shows of the greats, i would crawl between shows. The rat pack, hackett, rickles, etc etc

Bud ~ I have to say i was a bit amazed at some of the sales on those cards. But also the quality of many too. I have no art type talent. And very veyr jealous of those that do. I already called my 1 friend. The pet shops owners son. He does nice cartoonish stuff, use to do it for the shop all the time. He could use the money if he can sell some.

But seriously, what is your bid on my digital artwork? :)
Ya know I;m going to geet a warning from ebay now

catesdeals ~ To be honest I never heard of it. But I am not into card much at all any more. No cards I know of have gum any more. Cards are not listed by "bubble gum", so unless that is somethign with in this new area of "artist cards" i would not even use it. Just go with the flow. Post where the most post. Ebay also allows listing in multiple categories. Plus you have an option of starting a store.

good luck

I'm brand new to Ebay (one month) and have found much pleasure in doing my artwork on ACEO cards - the 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" blank cards which thousands of Ebayers are using to showcase their talent? Is there a consensus on listing them under bubble gum cards... i.e. I have some of my titles as: aceo bubble gum card lighthouse abstract? I always write bubble gum not included in the description. Anyone got an opine or general ruling? I'd hate to waste people's time and/or annoy them by not leading them to something they can chew on while watching the Cubs trounce the Laker's. Oops! Am I mixing my sports?! Much thanks.

hmmmm... since the Ted Williams Tunnel is on I-90 I could get on I-90 right here at the edge of town and go right to it - no stop signs or traffic lights the whole way! How far can it be - on the same road, right? It's only 5.25" on the online USA map I'm looking at so Buster and I ought to be there before dinner. BBL!

Just got a call from "Joy at ebay" (seriously, Joy? Bet they don't have anyone called "pain" or "Poed") - she wanted to go over the benefits of the upcoming changes which benefit sellers. I tried to tell her how I really felt but she kept wanting to go over the changes/"benefits" instead - sticking to the line she was trained to follow. I finally told her I did not appreciate her tactics in the conversation and hung up.

humboldt - Sorry, not me. There are a couple of people who post here that collect game cards, but I haven't seen them in a while.

If you have cards to sell, you can list them on eBay.
Posted by   ( ) on Feb-07-10 at 18:57:23 PST   Listings
"If you couldn't provide any information, why respond in the first place?"

Itch gave you a link to the card which not only identifies WHAT card it is ("1996 Topps Opening Day Set") but also an indication of its value (not much).

Now you want him to tell you why Beckett doesn't list it? They probably do - under 1996 Topps OPENING DAY SET. If Beckett doesn't list that set then you'll have to ask THEM why.
Posted by   ( ) on Feb-07-10 at 18:56:10 PST   Listings
fiacoordinator - How the heck am I suppose to know why Beckett decides to list some things but not others? And, which Beckett are you looking in? The monthly? The yearly? The quarterly? You forgot to provide that piece of usefull information. You're asking questions that only Beckett can answer. And I did provide you with information. I suggested you ask Beckett. Seems simple enough to me. But it seems like you want people to do your work for you. Not me. You need information from a publisher? Go to the publisher and ask.

Dale Prescott was apparently a character (played by actress Louise Collins) in a one-episode TV program in 1960 called "International Detective - The Prescott Case"

The timeline - 1960 - is too late to be associated with the Dorsey etal item.

BTW in 1944 Jo Stafford left the Pied Pipers and spent the better part of a year touring the war zones with the USO performing for the troops - they called her "GI Jo"

I just checked the move database. No luck. I also checked Jo Stafford thinking it might be her husband. No luck. Heck, Dale Prescott might be someone's wife. I did post the question on the Music & Musicians board.

ahhhh.... Jo Stafford...

She originally sang with her sisters and later joined the Pied Pipers. They were signed by Tommy Dorsey's band and backed up his prize soloist Frank Sinatra..... Buddy Rich was lead drummer with Dorsey's band for several years.

The Pied Pipers later quit Dorsey's band and joined a new record label created by Johnny Mercer - Capital records. Sinatra's favorite arranger was Billy May but when Mercer signed him to Capital Records Mercer chose Nelson Riddle to be Sinatra's music arranger for Capital recordings. Sinatra was not happy about that but the vast % of Sinatra fans strongly prefer Riddle's arrangements.

Yep, poor ol' Bye Bye made a poor choice when he made me his agent.

Boy, did I have a strange dream. I dreamed that I was the agent for aging baseball player Bye Bye Balboni. He was 38 or so and was set to receive maybe $850,000. He hired me to negotiate a small raise even though U had zero experience, wasn't prepared and was trying to negotiate with a Branch Rickey type seated at a huge wooden desk and who was only giving me part of his attention. I didn't do a good job. The offer was for $560,000 with a reminder Balboni's insurance was set to expire the following month.

I'm now awake and with HOT COFFEE by my side, I look forward to a Balboniless day.

Good morning all...

Sounds like a cheap movie plot, doesn't it. Was UD in that much trouble fincially, or was a group just stupid and greedy? We use to chat a bit about old topps people taking stuff out of teh trash, and if they had the means to make themselves stuff. That was speaking of old school cards.

Konami blasts Upper Deck in statement on settled Yu-Gi-Oh! counterfeiting case
By Chris Olds
2/3/2010 8:55:25 PM

Konami issued its first public statement on Wednesday following the settlement of its long-running dispute with Upper Deck over the Carlsbad, Calif.-based trading card company’s unauthorized production of more than 600,000 Yu-Gi-Oh! trading cards.

The case was settled before the second day of a trial could begin in a U.S. District Court in Los Angeles last week. Konami was seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages after a judge found that Upper Deck did, indeed, make unauthorized counterfeit cards that were distributed via repackaged products.

Upper Deck opted to settle and was due to make its first multi-million-dollar payment (specifics of the settlement were confidential) on Friday. It’s a case in which a New York Post story says has fueled “widespread speculation that this case could severely hurt its financial health. Some believe [Upper Deck] is on the brink of bankruptcy.”

Konami’s release on Wednesday included both statements from Upper Deck’s attorney as well as its company officials — a sharp contrast to UD’s statement issued last Friday.

“At this point, Upper Deck doesn’t have a lot of Life Points. We’re talking about behavior that, from a defense attorney’s standpoint, I can’t defend and I am not going to defend,” said attorney Richard Howell, of Rutan & Tucker, who represented Upper Deck during the trial. ”I’m here defending a counterfeiter. And now I have to deal with that issue.”

Konami also addressed Upper Deck’s statement — as well as its stance on UD’s credibility in the marketplace.

“This entire situation came as a huge shock to us. As a company that has based their entire business model on producing authentic entertainment and sports licensed products, Upper Deck went against their very core beliefs by counterfeiting Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Cards,” said KDE’s Vice President of Card Business Yumi Hoashi. ”It was very disheartening to learn that a trusted business partner would take these actions to dupe us and the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG community.

“As a leading company in this card industry, Upper Deck should have known more than well that counterfeit activities would irreparably harm the trust of Duelists and the integrity of the Yu-Gi-Oh! brand.”

Konami’s statement continued, reading: “The cover-up included a meeting in the office of Upper Deck’s chairman, in which he and at least one other Upper Deck employee compared samples of authentic Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG cards against fakes made by Upper Deck, and shredded the samples in the chairman’s office, as well as an e-mail from an employee of Upper Deck to other employees asking to provide her information on how to obtain Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG security foils ‘in secrecy.’

“Following almost one full year of court proceedings, Upper Deck finally admitted to having printed in China and importing to the U.S. hundreds of thousands of bogus Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG cards. Mr. Howell of Rutan & Tucker noted in the opening statement to the jury: ‘The behavior is still undeniably wrong. And I am in here, as counsel for the two defendants, asking you to hold my clients accountable for that behavior; asking you to hold my clients responsible for this conduct that there is no dispute, and there was no disputing even before this case started today, that it was wrong.’”

The Konami statement comes in sharp contrast to Upper Deck’s public statement on the matter, which touted its building of a “a solid foundation on which Yu-Gi-Oh! will benefit for years to come” and that it was “pleased to announce that it has come to a successful resolution.” It also included a statement from Upper Deck CEO Richard McWilliam.

“Though we are delighted that Konami was finally forced to see the light regarding its claims, there is, of course, a bittersweet side to the ending of this dispute,” McWilliam said. “During the six years we spent building the Yu-Gi-Oh! brand we formed strong ties to the playing community, and, in the end, they are the ones that suffered most because of this lawsuit. Instead of focusing on the merits of the case Konami focused its efforts on pursuing exaggerated claims and damages which it could not establish in the courtroom.”
