In all fairness to the tech, those antitheft systems are a PITA to repair. If it was the body control modual bad,it may not of stored any codes or flashed the dash light.Thats the fun part of fixen the system.

Take it easy cutting them trees up,that'll wear ya out.

Evening U'alls! I think I just about overdid it today... cut down two pretty good sized (50+ ft tall, 18 inches through the butt) trees, one hemlock, the other a tulip poplar. Got them both ready for the splitter.

I know, poplar is no good for firewood, but I was sick of the dang thing....It'll burn..... (if it don't rot first)

I'm sore as heck now, should have just stuck with the phinialls (sp?), and called it a day!

This is a automotive shop talk chat room/board... but, none-the-less,
Try some common sense an logic with your problem child buyer.
You inform them they will receive their full refund from you (less shipping an handling both ways) when you receive the "actual" item you sold to them an they received from you in the same condition they received it from you, and be polite, courteous, and professional in all your correspondence to them (even if they are rude to you, if they are), as well you need confirmation from them of any/all (copies will do) correspondence they have of authenticity confirmation they have in their possession.
A lot of buyers are good at pull'n the 'ol switcheroo on sellers, even if the seller is honest.
A lot of "BS" games lately on eBay, sellers an buyers alike...

Hello,
I need some help...I am new to ebay as a seller. I sold a 'Prada Women's Handbag' and now the buyer has sent me a threatening email. I was questioned when the item was listed if it was fake or real and I put it out there that this bag was a gift to me and all the hardware etc said 'Prada' and the price started @ $8.00...So now I get this from the buyer, which BTW, one person bought it and another paid for it and they wanted feedback from me as soon as they paid for it... "I have took this to dealer for Prada and they verified that this is not real prada I am going to give you till Saturday to refund me $35.00 back otherwise I am going to file a complaint with ebay as well as US Attorney office for selling counterfeit products on line and deliver them via usps which considered felony plus since you have sent this products via US postal service I am also filling complaint against your via US Postal Inspector office.... you have 24 hours!"

I have no problem giving them their money back, but how will this effect my feedback as they will obviously give me negative...and I also assume they will not ship the item back because of all the postal service comments...I suppose I can email back and ask for a tracking number for return, then I will refund their $$$...HELP

Good Morning Everyone A bit breezy, but warm outside. Sure beats mid November in New England.

Short work week after this weekend. Looking forward to some turkey and the boys to help devour it.

Have to work on the window valance for the 10' picture window in the living room. Took jonp three trips to Lowes to get a length of PVC pipe and 4 wooden rod supports installed. No finials on the rod yet, but I suspect a couple more trips to the hardware store will fix that. If he would just steer clear of the dremel toy aisle and head straight to the window treatment section......

Evening U'alls! Cobalt update #42... Son got it back from the dealer this afternoon. From what I gather they replaced the fuel pump and the module (what module?).

Anyway, everything was covered under warranty including the tow. That was a good deal...

I'm going to have to look that warranty over. The folks that originally purchased the car bought it, not sure who from. Chevy had it in their data base, so maybe from them?

Hi All, Hottish and humid today, Mostly cloudy with isolated showers. Partly cloudy and mild this afternoon with a slight chance of a thunderstorm. Highs in the mid 70s. Southeast winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 20 percent. (thats 100% humidity right now..sun is out though.

Raked up under the magnolia tree yesterday, about half the back yard. For people who don't know about magnolia trees it is just like raking up a pile of hand-grenades and paper plates.

I don't have the ASE that is demanded with each mechanic's job now. Doesn't matter if you can fix cars or not. With all the plastic push-to-fit fuel fittings nowadays it is easy to gauge fuel pressure. Just pop a line off and crank. Not saying how safe those are for fuel.. just quick and easy, does require that pump isn't shut down by controls otherwise.

bmp - humm, you will need to ask ALL the questions. The factory specs will have the only answers..
Like, are those "double-chips" that are using all the CPU resources already? (what can the CPU handle). What speed do they need to be..etc.
The dip switches -yes- critical settings by the book, usually changed for re-config.
I dont think those are common IC's as I dont see them listed on catalogs or cross charts. Often the prefix is manufacturer - might not be Motorola as they used MC or MPC, check:
http://www.engineering.uiowa.edu/~eshop/mflogo.dir/ic-id.html
The center part of number is the base type: 6504-5.
I do see one place you may check with as they list some IC's with that base: search MI-6504-5
http://www.turboelectronics.com/main.php?PRG=search
The last part may be speed, data, or proprietary...
Motorola ICs are here now:
http://www.freescale.com/
Check part numbers can be written many ways when shopping.

outlaw I can sympathize with the techs to a certain extent. I know I couldn't work against a flat rate. I'd be so poor it wouldn't be funny.... the idea is to get as many jobs out the door in the least amount of time, and pick up that check so Mama and the kids can get some grub. You don't have the luxury of sitting around figuring things out.

From what I've read up on this passlock system in the Cobalt, when you turn the key, a hall effect sensor on the tumbler housing is supposed to send a signal to the BCM. If that signal is within range of what the BCM is "trained" to recognize, it allows the ECM to activate the fuel injection system. If it doesn't get the proper signal, it's a no go.... Either way, the fuel pump should be running, rail pressure should be up and ready. In the case of the Cobalt, the pump never came on when the new battery was installed. So....maybe there was a problem with it.

That 99 problem child Cavalier that I replaced the harness in....wouldn't start until I found out how to get it to "relearn" it's security code. But I could hear the fuel pump running. I think the theft light was flashing too, don't remember for sure, and not sure if it's the same system used today anyway. Took awhile to figure that out.

But, a half decent GM tck should know it already?

Sounds like the engineers that designed that ignition key setup must have arisen from a nightmare.
Why is the design so bad they have to have a back-up lever to remove the key if the lock hangs up?

oldbikeboy - Maybe Obama cut the FAA budget for a backup, so the money could be used for the new healthcare program?

For the most part, GM neglect'd to put any sort of fuel pressure notification device in the computerized system.
Engineers, they are great, eh?
My 2002 Pont Gran Prix never had a code (hard code or soft code) when the ignition switch, the lockout tumbler solenoid, or shifter lockout solenoid went tits up.

Folks hired by most dealerships are common folks, who are either hired cause of how their job application looks 'er otherwise.
Most business's these days never check on a applicants job resume.
It is not what you know, its if you know how to play the "game" to become employ'd.

I am never at the dealership look'n over any technicians shoulder either (I'd have to slap someone for emmit'n as much ignorance as they must be), cause the end results of vehicles I have witness'd come'n from dealerships is an atrocity to any good dealerships and/or technicians that must be someplace round this country.

Dealerships don't give a crap (regardless what they claim, and only a fool will believe otherwise), bout honesty of repairs, all they care bout is how much $$$$$$$$$ can they extract from a customer's wallet 'er from any kind of warranty contract involved, bottom line...

Posted by   ( ) on Nov-19-09 at 05:21:22 PST   Listings
If you want to make a zillion bucks.....all's you gotta do is design a simple "get around" for these BCM's. (body control module).

That little bugger, and it's anti theft crap causes more dang problems...... I know, you can buy a box for a remote start, but all that's doing is sending a simulated pulse to it to tell it all's well, we can go now, I'm not stealing you.

I want to rip and out completely, and have the satisfaction of throwing as far as I can down into the gully behind the house!

Posted by   ( ) on Nov-19-09 at 05:13:05 PST   Listings
outlaw I agree with most of what you're saying, but of course I'm not there looking over the tech's shoulder, so I can't say for sure what's going on.

I find it unfortunate that the manufactures built a buggy with all this fancy equipment, computers and such, and the diagnostic equipment with which to plug in and find the problems, but still got some bozo on the other end that doesn't have a clue how to run and interpret that info. So he winds up replace stuff until something works.

If it was me (or you), I'd want to make damd sure that fuel pump was really bad, or it's something else in the car not tuning it on. I have no idea if that happened or not.

I gotta beg to differ with you on the key removal procedures. You and I know about it, but there's no reason to expect most people to know anything about it. However, if you read your owners manual, it does tell you to take this little cover off, press up on the gizmo, and voila! There's your key. But ya read it. How many people do that?

Heck, half the owners manual deals with how to set the clock on the radio!

Keep in mind, the Cobalt didn't throw any security codes when the new battery was installed either, at least not on the dashboard, so who knows, maybe the pump decided to take a dump right then for some reason.

Still doubt it though.....but, I ain't there either.

You must have one of them GM dealers with limit'd logic in yer location.
I'd bet the problem I had with a 2002 Pontiac Gran Prix is like what you are experience'n with yer Cobalt... 'er dang near like it anyhows.
What yer dealership goons are screw'n with werk'n on ain't the problem, an all they are doin' is prove'n how stupid they are.
There is a manual key cylinder lock release on the bottom side of the steer'n column (it allows the key to turn to the off position an take the key out, design'd fer when the shift lock actuator screws up... been there done that), an anyone familiar with a GM product should know where it is located.
In yer case, thank goodness fer extend'd warranties... specially design'd fer stupid mechanic/technicians ASE certified morons...

nomads I wouldn't be to surprised if they're replacing the BCM, but I'll betcha a dollar the problem is a screwed up lock cylinder (that was messed up because the shifter park switch is not making proper contact)

Lock cylinder was damaged because they had to force it back far enough to get the key out. Still was left in accessory, which killed the battery, but I don't see it killing anything else by doing that.

Good Morning: 60 degrees now, today cloudy with occasional showers. Thunder possible. High 71F. Winds ENE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 50%. Radar shows most parsip. passing west of me. Maybe I can get some raking done before the wet stuff.

Nice your neighbor helped with the leaves doc, Here they empty the bags into a truck and throw you the bags back at the curb for re-use. I had to learn not to close them to tight or they rip into them. When I was a kid we had a few acres of oak trees & always raked leaves onto giant old sheets, then just grab the four corners up and hump-back it off to the burn pile. We did them into compost piles a few years where Dad made a ring of fencing and we dumped them there. Years later you could get good mulchy dirt off the bottom.

jonp - good about that warranty on the car, should have pushed for a new ignition now. Is "reprogramming" just waiting for a new chip to plug in a box?

Our "puppy" has his endearing tricks. Eating parts of the house like a goat. Or eating paper towels and then throwing up on the rug.

I got my email and bookmarks all straightened out on this re-loaded laptop, starting to feel like home again. I also spent hours cleaning and re-arranging stuff in the garage. That project has a ways to go...

Rant! - Dang &(^#&(*#@ County!
Been busting my butt for the past 3-4 weeks getting my leaves up and at the curb in time for the county vacuum truck, as have thousands of other residents.

So, this week-end on local TV, we have been advised that there will be no vacuum pickup, to save $2 million of the budget. Only bagged leaves will be picked up, and they will vacuum only around street drains. They couldn't publicize this a month ago, no, they wait 'til most everyone is done raking.

So I go out this morning and start bagging the wet soggy leaves. I come in for a break, as my heart is pumping 90 gph. When I go out, my across the road neighbor is shoveling my leaves. He jerry-rigged a 6' square tarp to drag behind his lawn tractor. I had a good tall pick-up size load of leaves. We loaded up about 5 tarps worth, he drug them over to his farm and dumped them in his field.

What a lifesaver Mick was. We got done in a short time. I profusely thanked him, ate my lunch and took a nap.

They gonna save $2 mil? Very doubtful. They have to still send trucks to pick up bags, which aren't normally used, and the vacuum will still be used to clean around the drains.

Good morning All! Today should be a nice day with a very slight chance of rain. Yesterday was clear enough that we were able to see a little bit of the exhaust trail from the shuttle launch. Not near as visible as the early morning shot a month or so ago but still not too bad.
Off to see Flo and then back to take care of a few things around the house.
Everyone have a safe day.

Good Morning U'alls! Cobalt update.... Got towed to the local Chevy dealer around noon. According to them, it needs a new fuel pump, which will be installed today. Well, okay, if you say so...but it better run when you're done! BTW, the young Jarhead's making out pretty good on this one. Turns out the old couple that originally bought the car also purchased an extended warranty. Car has bumper to bumper coverage for about another year or so.

I'd be nice if I had coverage on some of my planes....

Doc, go right to the source.
Nasa TV is so cool:
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html
There is a link for "other viewing options" where windows-media-player will let you stream full-screen. I'm going to watch the launch that way. rg - got your camera primed? They had an electrical buzz and now say it is from something in cabin lights. Still a go..

Power is all from fuel-cell?? Can't see them running a delco alternator. Popular Mechanics had an article on car system buzz this month. We always ran to radio shack and got a noise suppressor (a capacitor) to add on. This says your heaters or AC loads will be when buzz is worst and nowadays it means the diodes in alternator are not 100%. Those rectify AC to DC.. Put an AC volt meter on battery (red-to-pos, black-to-neg), run engine at 1500rpm, then switch on window heaters, AC or whatever loads. AC current will be un-filtered ripple. more than 0.09 volts means alternator diodes are not up to par.

There was also news about newest refrigerant R-123yf coming our way. No retrofits but will be used on new cars in Europe then here maybe 2012.

Also old news about Jay Leno's Jet car. GM custom design mostly corvette based.

tech Sorry to hear of your Uncle's passing. Got me to thinking. The last of my father's brothers, there were 7, passed away last year at 95. He was the oldest of them, little short guy, never married, drank, smoked, or even drove a car, farmed all his life, died spreading manure out in the south 40! Talked to him 2 years ago, he took a day off to go to the family reunion (I should say he took a few hours off, had to go back home at 4 for milking), he was still sharp as a tack.... He liked that "organic" farming. That meant you left the shit (!) on the eggs and shipped them down to them "New Yorkers" for the big bucks! All natural don't you know....he never saw a chicken wash an egg. Hee-hee.

nomads, jersey, everyone! I agree, the passlock system may be the problem. Although if it's not happy and ready to go, the anti-theft light was supposed to flash indicating it wasn't happy. That didn't happen, but we tried the 10 minute relearn thing anyway....no joy.

Spark? No way of telling really, these guys don't have the tools or knowhow to figure that out.

tech I'm with you,we need the sun.Either that or grow webbed feet.

outlaw You have a little snow to your west.

jonp The Chevy anti theft system is a nightmare. It was probably designed by an offspring of Lucas.
The best way to start is check the codes, engine and body. There doesn't seem to be any common problem with the ones we had at the shop.
One thing that did work was to relearn the key.You need a fully charged battery.Put the main key in the ignition and turn it to the run position,do not try to crank the engine. All of the dash lights should be lit.If any are out look for a bad fuse.If all the normal lights are on leave it on run for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, don't cheat, turn the key off. Then try and start the car.
Maybe the key learn was lost when the battery went dead.Let me know if this works,if not I'll check All-Data tomorow for any other quick fixes.

Another cloudy, gloomy day here. Woke up and through some glitch it is 55 outside but our AC was cranking out. Happiness is warm socks! (and Sun if it shows up..).

rg - sounds like Gd has good timing - moving south to escape some of that coldness. Good luck with the new location for her. Hope the parents didn't move there to get away from her. JK..

nomads - Nope, nothing clean about Moon Water. The whole place is dusty/dirty in fact. Now that there is water maybe we can get the place cleaned up and see what color it really is. Under the dirt and cheese layers it might be a big emerald or something. Maybe we can place a giant one of those "scrubbing-bubble" automatic shower cleaners on top and let her rip. Obama's space committee just announced that they wanted to nix plans for our "return-to-moon" project. Big budget problems.. makes sense but there go many more jobs..

jonp - don't know what to say, your best bet is the cobalt forums. Did that solenoid fail and trap the key? Sounds like the time I parked my jeep one night and it refused to start the next day. Turned out to be a cracked coil.. it was giving spark, but not enough.

Crabs: Yesterday our Granddaughter moved from Maine down to Maryland. She finally gave up with the Maine Winters and decided that living in Maryland with her parents was a better choice. We'll see how long that lasts. :-)
Jonp: It's a pretty easy thing to bypass the ignition switch IF you think that is the problem. All you need is a separate hot wire going to the coil to see if the engine will run. I'd be willing to bet that changing out the ignition switch could be a real pain.
Posted by   ( ) on Nov-15-09 at 04:28:46 PST   Listings
Knowing that he messed with the ignition switch quite a bit in attempts to get the key out, I wonder if he damaged it enough so that when it returns from the crank position, it's actually turning the ignition off in whats supposed to the "run" position.

In other words, the engine is actually starting, but quits when you release it from the crank position......

Hmmmmm???? Have him crank it and slowly bring the key back to a point where it quits cranking, but not all the way back to run...... I've seen that happen with "sloppy" switches.

Good Morning U'alls! RG I'll have him check that..after I figger out where the heck it is...if it has one. But....the dang car was running when parked. The only problem was he couldn't get the ignition switch back to "off" so he could remove the key. By fooling around with it, he finally got the key out, but the ignition was left in the "accessory" position, which killed the battery.

After doing some research on the key problem, we found out you could open a panal off the steering column, and manually depress the solenoid that allows the ignition to go back to the "off" position. This solenoid is controlled by the shifter which has a switch in it, purpose of which the shifter must be in park to allow switching off the car and locking the column. (makes sense sorta when you think about it, safety thing.)

Nobody mentioned it was Friday the 13th..

When updating my computer I was glad to see that SeaMonkey browser has a new version with some nice upgrades. They state that it now uses what is basically the Firefox engine. Only two things I really didn't like before was that upgrading versions was a royal pain, needing to move personal data and then return it to the right directories after upgrade. That - and also the "home" icon could not be placed on the navigation toolbar (so you had to run an extra toolbar if you wanted it. Now this new SeaMonkey version has friendly updates like Firefox and toolbars are fully customizable. I still had to drag the "home" icon where I wanted but glad for the results. The advantages of SeaMonkey is that it has it's own mail client so you don't need the separate "Thunderbird" for handling that. It now truly is the modern "Netscape" IMHO. Firefox and SeaMonkey were both forks of development off of mozilla and still handled under mozilla.org

It's confirmed, most of the local roads are closed. Some lady was yellin at the local police maning the roadblock for Rt30.She was late for work.I'd like to see her Honda make it the 4 miles on a road under 2 ft of salt water.

The worse part of a nor'easter is the inland tidal water does not drain. Then each high tide adds water to the flood. Most of the islands built up their dunes on the ocean side.So now the bays flood and the water washes back across the islands from the bay to the ocean.

I'm not sure what happened on the floor deal, but we probably got about 10 inches of rain! I could see standing water all around, and since we're sitting on clay (more than likely around here) it takes awhile to "soak" through. Basement was sitting in a big mud puddle?

OBB This "little" Nor'easter was worse than hurricane Isabelle that hit this area a few years ago imho. At least that thing came through, blew a little, rained a lot, then moved on. This system just sat there for two days or so!

Most of the classic storms that hit the east coast were Nor'easters. They can really clean your clock!

Morning, good deal on the dry floor jon, did that water blow in?

obb - if you we standing in outside up there you would not be asking that. They are getting hammered by winds from the north. The low is slowly moving like you said but it is centered just off shore from us down here. Now while I hardly see any wind it is circling CCW like a real low grade "hurricane" (like jon is saying). The north-west quadrant is always the place to NOT be in a storm, and right now jersey & nomads happen to be there (and on our news here). They are at the top of circling winds that seem to come from their north-east PLUS there ARE cold powerful winds added in that are joining along PLUS then weather channel says that a high pressure area north-west of the storm is compressing the winds like a nozzle. I remember a night hearing waves "cracking" on the beach like a stick of dynamite when they hit.

So its based on the wind direction and not the path taken?
Posted by   ( ) on Nov-13-09 at 05:08:33 PST   Listings
oldbikeboy
We had a high pressure, with clockwise winds north of us,
a low pressure with counter-clockwise winds south of us.

The rotations of the 2 systems caused the wind to come from the NE, sucking in a lot of rain..
Thus, a Nor' easter.

Good Morning U'alls! OBB It arrived here as a "Nor'easter" because it came across Fl and Ga and headed up the east coast just out to sea. Since it's counter rotating, the winds come from off shore from the Northeast as it arrives.

Here's a strange deal. My basement flooded yesterday for the most part. The winds and rain have died down finally, so I thought I'd have to deal with a bunch of water to get out. Surprise....80% of it's gone! Right down to a dry floor! It even isn't damp!

Morning all. 69° today and dry. If its dry enough need to get up leaves today. Why is the storm getting you fellows up the coast called a northeaster? It came up the coast from the Southeast.

Good morning All! Friday is here and the temps are a little cooler. Should be a nice day with highs in the upper 70's.
Tech: That rockslide in Tennessee was on Hwy 64 in the Ocoee River Gorge, right by the dam where we stopped and let the dog run around last month. That is a beautiful drive along that road. That's going to take awhile to clean up.
Nomads: Glad the high waters missed your estate. Best of luck for your friends and neighbors.
Off to see Flo and get this day going. Everyone have a safe day.

Ok things are passing me by.. kinda distracted but the laptop is now updated and loaded for bear. I'm on it now.

REALLY want to say thanks to Veterans for their service! I did talk to a few local friends I know but didn't get that message on here. THANK YOU. I was reading the paper today about the soldier that shot the madman in Texas. I don't know if she is getting press nationally like she is here but since she grew up in this area it is pretty big news. I bought a lot of items at her Dad's hardware store when I first moved down here. Thoughts are with the families and injured over this Veterans day.

jon.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! gonna try to have something for you after while, It's just an idea right now.

We only had 3.8" of rain yesterday and 0.36" today, winds gusted highest to 21mph about 8am. I walked a few miles up for groceries about 10:30 in a mist.. much better than advertised. The worst should be over here.. Sounds like you are really getting it up the coast.

Saw the video of a rock-slide out in Tenn., what a piece of film to see trees just moving along.

I have $19.99 Nokia. It's not a flip.
My next one will be a flip, as this one, if kept in my pocket, sometimes activates the buttons. No dialing, but just keeps entering numbers.
Don't know how much you use it, but it cost me $7 a month, pay-as-you-go.
Guru has the same one, and just called me from South Carolina. Sounds as good as a hard wired one.

I have to be one of the very few folks who don't own a cell phone. Somehow, I have managed to live all these years without one.

Good luck finding one that doesn't do everything but the dishes.

this is a good place to ask this.. You are working in your shop, working in the yard, doing stuff all over; what is a good basic cell phone that can hang in there with day to day use/traffic? Wondering if anyone has one they like? I lost my phone last week and got another to replace it. My old one was a cheap flip phone (can't remember what model) that I wore in a belt holster thing. It had an exposed volume button on the side that was a pain. It would shut off the ringer at times to make me miss calls. They make so many types now. I started reading reviews on tons of them at CNET and the AT&T sites. All i really need is clear phone, answering, time/alarms. Don't give a hoot about games, text, web features... The one i'm trying out is a nokia 2600, it doesn't flip closed to protect itself and the keys are small but it sounds real good.

The sales-lady really didn't understand guys at work. She showed me some fancy gizmo and I was asking "what do I do with that?" so she shows me this big honking holster that looked like a purse.

I have found that a belt holster with a magnetic catch flipping over the top is best at keeping the phone from dropping out of the open type that just pinch down on it. I think mine might have been made by "body glove" - some aftermarket brand with generic types.

How many ways have you killed a cell phone?
I've had one fall out of a holster in a parking lot and found it run over. Had them stolen out of a car. Saw a lot get dropped overboard or off the dock. (and you can't dry them off in a microwave) I really think the dog ate this last one, it just disappeared..

Hi nomads, only when I stand in the rain. Haven't lived on the docks for about a year now.. since the factory I worked at shut down. It is just a few miles east to the beach and just a few miles west to the river.. A friend worked over on a Cape Fear Island today, had to use a ferry for access. He said he had never seen tides that high. The ramp onboard was a steep climb. But I'm not sure what tides he has seen.

I've exhausted most repair options for my laptop system not booting. So I'm biting the bullet and reloading everything from scratch. Actually running KillDisk right now to wipe the drive clean first. I'm not losing any data, got that backed up. I'll be updating and reloading files & applications for a day or two?? Oh well the system will be clean then maybe. A good project for rainy days.

If you buy a computer, It is good to get real microsoft Windows install disks for the system. Compaq sold me this laptop with "QuickRestore" disks that take it back to as-new, but one thing you don't get is being able to use the windows install disks for it's "Recovery Console" that can do some repair commands..
