One of the best, well-maintained places to learn rockabilly, cowboy film and guitar and the pop culture of the early rock era on the net would have to be our own Rockin' Eddie's "Me" page.

Each time I visit I'm glad I did...Put on your glad rags, grab a cheezburger and Coke, see a few classic cars while jamming to the jukebox, and you are there, capturing the essence of Sun Studio and those great artists at work. Also, you'll get a glimpse of the chat family and their residences and wervices, too!

The rides kept running and the lights stayed on for a special customer, Elvis Presley. He would rent the park, bring family and friends, and ride the roller coaster in privacy around and around the wooden track.

The Zippin Pippin, as it was later renamed, is silent now. Libertyland park closed to the public last fall and has not reopened. This is only the third summer in generations that the Pippin has not clattered over its tracks. The park's historic Grand Carousel is dark, its painted wooden horses stabled behind locked doors. The other rides and attractions have been sold and are being trucked away piece by piece.

I have to think to myself that if Elvis was still alive the park would be too.

In this video you will see Elvis having fun at the park.

Dkc..They could go in the garage if they wanted, not sure if they would..LOL

I could have opened the big garage door but there was so much snow that I was afraid it would fall in and I wouldn't be able to get it back down.

Kinda a scary feeling not being able to open a door and go out...Yikes! We had so much drifting ontop of it, which didn't help matters.

My son is texting me now cussing away...LOL
He spent 2 1/2 hours shoveling his car out, went to take a warm shower before work, came back out and the plow truck plowed him back in up to the doors..tee hee..he had to start all over and was late to work to open the shop..he ain't happy!!

Beautiful out, but what a pain!

Here is my moms car, Diane...LOL

Sharkster here Is the URL that will do it all for you. It will start you out at 1955 but you will figure out how to navigate. If there is a video of the song click the video button and you can watch it. If you click the MP3 button and Amazon has It for 99 cents you can download It. That could add up In a hurry......

I like those cemetery stories, Liked the one especially of your friend saying Thank you -CB, I would have jumped out of my shoes at that one Ha Ha. I did a stupid thing in broad daylight once at the cemetery, I had lost alot of friends and relatives right along in a row . I was very upset and distraught got out of my car on a nice sunny day to visit the grave, no one in sight for miles it seemed and suddenly I got angry at God , I screamed and I do mean screamed at the top of my lungs at God that morning "Dont you dare take another one from me do you here me" Well a couple was bent over planting flowers very close by, didnt see them there and they looked like Horrified and very frightened and ran to there car.LOL . Must have thought I was a nut for sure, think maybe God laughed a bit at m e too. LOL

Sorry I somehow did a double post...Now here is the weird part....most of all those artists from the 50's are long gone....what Is the chances that both of the singers I selected are still alive....well Pat and Tommy are still alive and well as far as I know....

I found a very beautiful polished rock in the pile today. We only glean when the Christmas stuff is gathered and they have to post a notice in the paper before they do it so the relatives can go get anything they want back.

Ok, CB, anything ever peculiar happen in your cemetery visits? Any strange finds?

Back in the 80's I was visiting a historical cemetery down South in August that was very hilly. In the distance far from where I was looking at Civil War headstones, I could see a freshly dug grave, chairs set up, with a tent, etc. in a more modern section, but no one was around it.

While I was walking to the top of a hill, a lady in a black Victorian dress and veil, came up the opposite steep side of the hill unknown to me, and met me face to face at the exact crest of the hill. I had no idea anyone would be there when I got to the top, startling me. We exchanged brief eye contact at about 5 feet distance, my heart thudding, I briefly nodded as she passed beside me and tried not to stare. I recall hearing her dress rustle and that decreased as she off went behind me. I decided I'd had enough and went to the car. I turned around out of curiosity, and she was in the distance walking with a man in top hat and suit. She then had a parasol. It was ninety-some degrees that summer afternoon. I still don't fully understand what I saw. This happened; they were there, quite real, and I believe they were just two folks clad in past costume on a very warm day out walking in the cemetery...

After that experience, I've only visited family in cemeteries here with the set purpose to lay flowers, pay respects, etc. with nothing odd ever happening.

Fun stuff Eddie, and thanks for the photos Dorothy
We went Cemetery gleaning and re cycling. We saved a lot of lil live trees in pots, that were headed to the dump. I read all the letters we find out loud to the loved ones. Sad but it is good that we save a lot of the stuff and it gets a second chance. The trees will all be planted.

OK so what the ell are U all doing? I took my metal hunter to the lake bed today for some RandR, found an old Chrysler car key and another mans wedding ring. Pose they are tossing them in the Lake or is someone trying to give me hints. That is the third one I have found.
If they were engraved I would attempt to find the owner but they aren't The one today has three different Hallmark Stamps in it, must be special silver or could be platinum.

Yep Sharkster they say "Duke" on um....A late friend Derral Nye used to buy and sell at all the Gun Shows In the southwest. I could have had a Duke rifle or 45 side arm but they were way out of my budget even when they were new. I sold a lot of collectors guns via Derral. I maxed out my Master card on some nice Duke posters. They were gone In two shows only because I did not send them all on the first show....hehehe....I still have one...

Well you all have your memories and opinions and that is what it is all about. So many of the books are just made up from people reading a lot and making up there own book from all the information they have gleaned from there collection.
I am proud of the small tid bits on Elvis from Elvis said to me, that will go with me and never be shared with the world. I honestly think when we talked he didn't want it to go in any book, and it won't. No block buster or bomb shell, just some very candid information that he trusted with me. I bet Sandi has a ton more she has never shared. So many of his so called fans have made so much up about how close they were with him, even they have come to believe there lies. So sad. This statement was in no way aimed at you Sharkey and MB, a lot of the folks here have had honest encounters with Elvis and people close to him. All fun stuff and I love to read all about it!

Thank you Sharkey - "Bill" would not come to me. I have these senior moments.

You are lucky to have known Mike and have pieces of his work. I'm sure you have many great memories.

Next question - are you going to read George Klein and Dr. Nick's books? {grin}

Posted by   ( ) on Jan-28-10 at 19:42:08 PST   Listings
Yes, MB,

I appreciate and agree with your comments, too, and I have little use for any book's "closed door" details of accounts of the drugs, sex, paternity cases, etc.

"Bill" is Mike's son.

Mike used to pick up the shell casings at target practice behind Graceland near the smokehouse. Someone had to clean it up, and Mike saved them with intentions for reloading. Yet, there were so many shells collected! Mike had the boxes all marked. They certainly made great necklace pieces. Mine has a TCB in 14 kt on a .357 casing with a blue turquoise bullet! Sometime, I'll post a pic of it. It was shot from Elvis' Colt Python.

The day I got that from Mike he gave me a piece of ruby red shag carpeting from when Linda Thompson helped decorate the house in the Vegas theme.

And I do know I shouldn't form an opinion unless I've read the book. That isn't fair, but sometimes it's hard not to.

:o)

Thanks Sharky. I do understand what you are saying. I have an extensive collection of books about Elvis. I just think some people shouldn't tell everything they know (Sheila Ryan comes to mind) and at this late date I tend to be suspicious of their memory unless they kept journals like Sandi Miller did. I think their memory becomes clouded by what they have heard over the years - and that's JMO.

I was never fortunate enough to meet Mike but I do have a TCB from his mold and a sterling ring (not Elvis related) that he made. And I did meet Barbara and their son (whose name won't come to me) and Dawn. They were good people. I've kicked myself for not buying one of the shell casing necklaces that Mike made. The last time I saw Barbara I asked but they were all sold. I went to his shop in Oxford two times and was so impressed with all his work and such a beautiful setting for a home.

Thanks for all your insight on this.

MB,

In all the years I knew Mike, he never said an ill word about anyone. He was a true gentleman and loyal Elvis employee. Yet, what he did tell me over the years, he felt secure to tell any Elvis fan, and I will continue to believe it to be valid. I've shared a few of the events here before. Mike made quality jewelry and leathercraft from show belts to saddles to guitar straps. His craftsmanship was his honest work, and he never wrote his daily recollections of Elvis at home. Mike was in charge of Graceland and Circle G horses, animals, and grounds. He did some gatework, and enjoyed making jewelry and leather goods for Elvis.

One part of Nash's book I enjoyed and regard as a "nugget" had nothing to do with "closed door" material, but some history on the first pink Cadillac and what happened to it. This supported some truth Mike once told me that you would never hear on any Graceland tour.

And, it was Mike who recommended that the gates should be open for the fans to walk up to Meditation Gardens
and pay respects when Graceland first considered public tours of the estate and grounds.

Mike was also in charge of personally delivering and displaying the '68 Comeback leather suit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame dedication.

Hey, MB.

When I was a student years ago, I was once told by a respected, wise person to read the classics and the trash so as to learn the difference. When I am reading a book on Elvis, I simply know it's not going to be Dickens or Shakespeare. Dickens and Shakespeare both wrote fiction which contained a lot of truth about humanity.

Some Elvis writers have evidently lacked a focus on facts. I don't have to read any Elvis book; it's just a choice for me to choose some like turning to a tv channel or radio station. Also, I can read it with mere curiosity without getting upset and form my judgment, good or bad. I probably have about 3,000 keeper books with 50-60 titles on Elvis alone for reference after reading them once.

The Nash book was a gift from my wife, so I read it! :)

I read books on a wide variety of topics regularly, some academic, others not.

In some books today that attempt a chronological biography with a specific focus, such as one on Elvis' early recordings, or stint in the military, or film career, or Vegas years, or involvement with females from infancy to death, it's not uncommon for a writer to document and refer to earlier print sources, and interviews, just as another author would do for books on historic figues, sports legends, celebrities, etc. Those interviewed could be honest or may embellish as many humans tend to remember things and tell them subjectively.

What sometimes surfaces is a mismash of facts, myths, and conjecture. It doesn't take a critical reader with some research done, very long to discern who is writing facts and otherwise. So, it is possible a writer may include foibles of other writers, too. Obviously, that could be subject to criticism as well. The reader can choose to quit reading and/or return the book to the library or the trash can or recycle bin...

Also, there is a concern about proprieties for both the author and the reader. Readers should be aware, especially with unauthorized bios, some authors are also trying to have a best-seller and have the urge to sensationalize, yet some of Elvis' real associates have never once talked out of loyalty and friendship. Those facts are forever sealed...

Sharkey, I find your review of Nash's book very interesting. Yours is about the first I've seen that doesn't call it pure trash. I read reviews that indicated she used old interviews and even (gasp) Goldman's book as reference. Did you not find that we were told a lot more about private matters than we had a right to know? Or because of your association with Mike did it substantiate a lot that he told you? Course I doubt he knew anything that went on behind closed doors. :o) I haven't been able to decide if I want to read it or not. Sometimes I think I know all I need to know about Elvis. And if the person you are referring to is the last, it's rumored (again) that she is writing a book. I'll be interested to see more of your thoughts on this. Thanks

This is what I suspect, that somehow he got stuck or lodged onto something the cage and beat his wings so bad he just bled out. I don't think the other bird is guilty of Murder! Nothing could of got into the cage, is is small and the bars are close. The birds are/were cockatiles (spelling?) small birds.

I put the bagged bird into the Jeep sent my friend back to her Shop and finished my lunch. I promised her I would give the bird a proper funeral and not just toss it into the trash. So I brought it to the Rancho dug a hole under a tree and by by birdie, hummmmmm that sounds like a good name for a song. Up on close examination, before I dropped his lil body into the earth I could only see that his wing tips were missing and bloody, no other trauma on his feathered lil lifeless bird body. Heres where you come in Zoo, what the ell ya think happened?

When I went to lunch yesterday some drama was served to me big time. My friend owns a used clothing shop next door to the lunch place. She came running into the lunch place crying her eyes out! Seems when she uncovered her birds while opening the shop, she was startled by a bloody cage and a dead bird on the bottom of it. The other bird was fine. I made her stay at the lunch place and I went over and bagged up the ded one and put new paper in the cage, than got a rag and cleaned up as much of the blood as I could. It was spattered all over everything, looked like a serious murder. Poor bird. The left over one was perched at his seed and innocently eating, like he didn't do anything. He had some spatter on him but none on his face or beak.

Below, JMHO:

I just finished Nash's new book, "Baby, Let's Play House". It's very thorough, with a lot of interviews with Elvis' ladies and female friends and both male and female work and family associates throughout his life, except for one I know of.

Also, Robin made a significant contribution, and there are some rare photos, courtesy of her. So cool!

There was one particular story of Scotty and Bill in the early days that I hadn't seen in print before which Mike once told me about regarding the original pink Cadillac that Elvis used to tell at Graceland.

I found a lot of the book to confirm whar we know, and the latter part to be quite sad, yet very informative. It's definitely a good read to discern the public performing Elvis from his complicated private life which was anything but easy.
