MOrning all y'all
"Geaux Saints" I took the Saints plus 5 points earlier in the week...Whodat?
Lots to do this morning, before leaving to see Sen Dan Patrick, Governor Rick Perry and Gov Sarah Palin.Pick up tickets at will call at 1pm supposed to begin at 2pm and out of their in time for the super bowl. Plan to DVR pregame in case I'm late getting home.I have a feeling there won't be much of a crowd because of superbowl. But "old teaparty supporter me" is definately going. Suppossed to be 55 degrees, but if I start to get cold, I'll definately leave ( I just can't take the cold at my age)3 of my friends are supposed to meet me there, hope we can meet up but in that crowd who knows?
Y'all have a good day now , yahere? BBL

Good morning, glassies.
Helen ... so much of how to price and list depends on you, your business, your finances, your personality. We each are so different. I don't have the reputation built up with a faithful following to be confident that I could put on something for 9.99 and count on it being bid to its full potention. I find that works mainly for people who specialize in certain areas, but not so well for those who have big variety of items for sales in lots of different categories. Book Value anymore is so often "over the top" inflated. For ME, my rule of thumb is "what is the least amount I will take that if it sells for only that I will not cry on the way to the Post Office."
You bought the item at a yard sale so for you that bottom price might be 49.99 or 99.99 or 199.99 or 499.99. I do not use Reserve for anything. I think that mainly annoys, JMHO. I had an item I paid big money for and I started it at 499.99. so as you can see, I'm not squeamish at starting above 9.99. LOL.
I'm trying to figure the starting price on 2 items I have. I think I'll start quite high actually because I love the items enough that they bring me a lot of pleasure. The only thing that would ease the pain of losing them would be an adequate amount of money. LOL. too true! I really meant that!
As far as the different dates, I would just say in the description...Book Such-n-such says 1870s. Web site Such-n-such states 1880s. I would ignore the "unknown manufacturer" reference as that book is probably out-dated by now.
All of the above is my opinion...how long-winded I am!
Susu ... thank you very much for help with the category. Ye gads, didn't even realize there was a 40/50/60 Libbey category. Perfect.
Time to get ready for Church.
Just me, Gail

Gillinder and Sons. Not Gilender. I do have trouble seeing those double lls. Helen in Indy.

Good morning glassies,
The snow storm left us about 5" of snow on Friday. Yesterday we had gentle winds to push the snow off the tree limbs. And then a beautiful bright sun the rest of the day. We are supposed to get more snow tomorrow.
I come with foot in hand today to ask for advice on listing an item. Some of you will remember that I had the good fortune to find this at a garage sale:: http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/2/9/9/7/2/3/webimg/308180000_o.jpg
Not a problem IDing it but how to describe and list it. One book says Gilinder , c 1870. A site by Pamela K. Zachary states Gilinder , 1880s. While another earlier book says unknown manufacturer. I can go with the 1870s , 1880s.
Reilly & Jenk's give a BV of $550. What should I do? Start at BV or less? Start at less with a stated reserve?
I note that the Zachary site does not have an image of this piece. I would like to do two things about that. First contact her with an image. And to let her know that I am going to auction the piece on eBay. Being the non-techie that I am I do not see a way to contact her. Help there. please.
Thanks, Helen in Indy

Ever try explaining the Superbowl to a Korean teenager who moved to GA from Canada? Can't be done - best I could do was that it was sorta like soccer's World Cup. Will be a day of burning incense & heartfelt prayer, plus anything else I can think of in hopes of helping. Geaux Saints!!! Susan

  Good Morning Glassies....;o)
|
|
Thanks All for edification and suggestions. It's 1 a.m. and I can't sleep, having had 2 evening naps. TSK! I hate that! So I'm scrolling.
Loved the "Geaux Saints" cheer! Last night I watched the "Rachel Maddeaux Sheaux". Everywhere I went today I heard "Who Dat?" I think the entire country wants N.O. to win - maybe even the Colts fans! I am, of course, a Pats fan, but am for this weekend only a Saints fanatique de la Cap De Poissons!!
Enchantress: A week? I couldn't do it. I have a 48 hr rule when it comes to relatives. On the 3rd day, just like fish, they start to smell bad!
My Super Bowl treat: stupid trail mix of raw nuts, raisins, dried banana chips and sunflower seeds. Oh Joy. Oh Rapture! For my cocktail I think I'll put my filtered water on ice made from filtered water. Again with the joy and the rapture.
Nite nite, Janice

Janice, I think you're thinking of the PGP Board, where they prefer that different pieces get their own threads. Also Angela's Glass Board - it makes it easier then for people to comment on one item. Here, however, if you just number your items and put them in one post, it helps us because of the 200 post rule. Things scroll off too quickly when we use up lots of posts.
Clear as mud?
Sorry have been absent for a while, we had relatives visiting from Wisconsin - they've gone back home, after a week's visit. Hallelujah. :D
|
|
I like the Saints also~ Such nice looking uniforms! I only watch the commercials anyways;o) I am making Chicken Wings for our Neighbors SB Party~ They will be lovely with my homemade Blue Cheese Dressing~~~~~Yummmmm.......
Janice, I agree with trying the PGP Board for your APB Glass... Fran;o)

Good Evening All Gail/oklahomasong Your Merry-Go-Round tumblers should be in # Pottery & Glass > Glass > Glassware > 40s, 50s, 60s > Libbey > If you want to spend the cash for a 2nd category I would go with barware and list them as "collins" glasses. JMHO
|
|
Janice I have not heard of the separation request before. It happens to all of us for many valid reasons. Personally I try to put it all together because of the boards limitations. Maybe I remember too much when the board used to cycle through several hundred posts a day. It is a lot slower now. george
|
|
Holy Smokes Janice you scored ! I love all of it. The celery looks like it has a circular crack though, or is that an optical illusion ?? Chris
|
|
Janice post your ABP over in the PGP discussion board. There are several very knowledgeable people over there that may be able to help.I have one listed they helped with, in that they told me it was European, not American.I had to go with unknown European pattern. Chris
|
|
Sharon/skccoast & Marson/panishko ... I swear I have to go back and re-read the posts because some pop up where I know they weren't before! I just can't believe how my eyes must skip posts.
Jeanne/jeannenl .. Sure wished I could help, but unfortunately I don't have any idea on your candlesticks.
??????????? What makes a candlestick a candlestick and a candleholder a candleholder and when are they spelled as all one word and when are they spelled as two separate words??? Inquiring minds want to know....
Janice ... Sorry I can't help with ABP...I've never even seen a piece in person in my whole life.
Good night to all.
Gail

Lucy ... I have the ID for them, just trying to figure where to go with them...glassware, kitchenware, kiddie ware, company name, era, barware...puzzle, puzzle. Loved Johnny Carson. Glad you liked to clip. I use to watch Carson every night back in the late 60s...man, time flies.
Gail

GAIL-I had a book with the carnivel-or circus figurals on frosted tall glasses years ago. I rcall it now-but don't know where that book would be. I am such a great helper outer. LOL- still laughing at Carson and Dom.
|
|
Janice If you go over to the PGP discussion board, and post all that brilliant glass for Mrs. admin and Jennessay, they will know it in a heartbeat. Just title your post over there with their names and ABP glass help, please. They know more about cut glass than anyone I have ever talked to. Oh BTW over there they prefer you post the photo's instead of links to the photos...quite different from us on the chat board. But those 2 girls have helped me out a zillion times.
|
|
Gail - how cute! No answer for you though... sorry.
I've been through all the books I have and not one glimmer of an idea on any of my brilliant shown below (13:19 - 13:28). Does anyone ever ID their brilliant or should I resort to the standard "exciting blend of hobstars, whirling pinwheels and fans that reflect light in spectacular fashion"? Blah, blah, blah. It's so pretty it should all have a pedigree!
George - if I lump a lot together in one post I'm told to put them in separate posts; now you say put it all in one post. You folks get together and make a rule, okay? LOL!
So pleased with my Ansonia clock and GWTW lamp! I also got a baseball signed by Johnny Damon (the traitorous beast went from Beantown to the Damn Yankees!). And a glass washboard. And all that brilliant. I was a bad, bad girl. Not my fault - can't have chocolate, gotta shop!
Janice

Gail they'd be just perfect for serving kids lemonade although with all the ice & snow outside something 'warmer' rather than 'cooler' might fit the bill. Marson musing
|
|
jerseystar: I'm starting to lean more towards Tiffin too. I had a piece of their Sky Blue Satin Opalescent a couple years back. The quality & feel of the satin texture on this Pitcher is very much the same. Also the tone & density of the opal rim seems much the same. The Sky Blue piece I had showed a faint "sheen" of the "fire" of the opal throughout the body of the piece. This Pitcher has that too.
Still checking through Tiffin sources, but I've been at it, off & on, all day, so I'm calling it quits for the night. Going to go fix a snack & watch TV for a bit.
|
|
??????? I love this set of glasses I got today. They are Libbey and called Merry-go-Round coolers...7" tall and hold 14 oz.....but I have no idea what category would work for them. Tumblers...or coolers (whatever those are??)...are all over the place. Any suggestions on categories? They are shaped like barware but decorated like kiddie ware.

Carma, although the weather maps showed it snowing here, apparently the air was so dry that the snow evaporated before it hit the ground. By the way, I know very little about glass, but that beautiful satin finish definitely reminds me of Tiffin.

Carma, Wondering about Hobbs, Brockunier and Co. , they did some of those squared rims. Just a thought.

THANK YOU!!!very much Carma and Nancy - and WOW!! what super fast responses.... appreciate your instant help :)rose

|
|
jerseystar: We seem to have avoided most of them this year. We're becoming "snow starved" up here. Lots of bare ground showing in the fields and the more open areas. Very unusual for this time of year.
|
|
Carma, glad that you confirmed what was merely a semi-educated guess on my part. Looks like we both avoided this latest snowstorm.
~~Nancy P.

Rose, on Dave Doty's site he has a section just on Back Patterns and shows "Bearded Berry, Fenton; Named for the "whiskers" that stick out of the berry shapes. Found on Orange Tree and several other Fenton patterns."
~~Nancy P.
|
|
|
tiqtek: The exterior pattern is called Bearded Berry. It's the usual back pattern for Peacock & Grape.
|

Janice the board only holds 200 posts so combining requests helps keep more different post on the board and does not interfere with the ability to get and give information. They do have some similar elements. george

I knew this day would come. One of the local estate outfits is now charging to get in early. If you buy their $100 anual membership, you get in at 8:00 instead of 9:00. This is an outfit I've spent multi-thousands at over the years. They had one house they did 5 sales in, that literally kept me supplied for a whole summer. Now I KNOW I'd come out ahead if I forked over the hun, but if I do it at their company, who's next? Am I going to have to buy a membership at every regular estate outfit in town? About that Findlay Onyx listing: registered mail isn't really all that expensive. For a 2 lb package, even at $3000 coverage, you pay an extra $17.15. So for MN to CA it would be $25.75. But if you look at the whole description, he said he put in $50 shipping, but he's really only going to charge actual cost--Bob

Thanks, George. I've pretty much exhausted my references on Fry, with no luck yet. I'm also considering the possibilty of Tiffin. For a very short time, they DID produce some Opalescent Satin pieces, but info on those items is very limited.
|
|
Carma I did a quick trip through the Fry Glass Society book and did not spot that squared rim or the handle shape/placement. Not an exhaustive review of Fry, I know.

George -- THANKS! Yes, opalescent... I get my '-escents' confused! Janice

Mike: Thanks. I've been leaning towards Fry myself, but still searching though.

Carma, nice looking pitcher, just a wild guess now - Fry? --- Mike

GEORGE--missed the word registered. LOL No more wallpaper got all off. My poor nails will never be the same.hehehe=feels good to do some real work for a change. All I do is sit.

Thanks MIKE and thanks GEORGE!!! Missed Mike's post someway but you brought it back to my attention.... Bob in KY

Your Blue Opalescent Vase is "Leaf Chalice" by Northwood, Dugan and National c.1899-1904
Janice, My reference is Opalescent Glass from A-Z by Heacock/Elmore.

Good afternoon glassies from cloudy NJ -- never did get any snow, even though the weather map makes it look like it's snowing here.
Chris/quadmomp, for future postings, separate the links for different pieces with some sort of description (e.g., bowl with roses, blue opalescent bowl). That way people will know there is more than one piece and not just six different views of the same piece. Or you can number the pieces, which also makes it easier for people referring to them. If I look at the first link and see that it's something I don't know, I won't necessarily click on all of the other links.
~~Nancy P.

quadmomp Turn the blue bowl over with a Plain back ground, that lace is confusing, and take a pic showing the fee and decoration. It has an English feel from what I can see but a better view is needed.

Hi again Glassies....just checking back to see if any info on my green vase I posted earlier today....I first thought Fenton, now I don't think its Fenton but don't have a clue as to what it might be....Bob in KY

Thanks Mike that was the name I was trying to come up with. At $1.00 I am not too concerned.

quadmomp\Chris, I believe the crystal bowl (third link) is by Houfbauer. Their forgotten about "Rose" pattern. Their Byrdes pattern is best known and most collected. --- Mike

Back from my hunting... a couple of interesting pieces, will have to research to be certain just how badly I've been gypped.
George & Lucy ... I'm certain I read somewhere that to qualify for Seller Protection you must have items that sold for $250 or more sent via registered mail.
quadmomp ... Hey guys, the first pic is KIG, not certain about the 2 item, but what about her third item the JIP blue thingy? Can't see the "stems" to it very well? Who made that?
Gail
|

Janice Do you mean opalescent? Anyway Heacock et als "Harry Northwood The Wheeling Years 1901-1925" pages 32 and 92. Not everything is available online.

Bob in KY, I think your swung vase is by L. E. Smith, from their Fayette Glass line. --- Mike

Thanks Fran. To the live and learn pile it will go.

FRAN! I have a buyer looking for reference guide for the luminescent Northwood spokes and wheels. I can't find anything online. Do you have name of book, author, page, etc??? THANKS! Janice
|
|
quadmomp - yes totally typical because quality isn't as important as quantity. I've had numerous pieces of KIA and have always put them in the yard sale pile because I do better with them there. Chris
