I'm passing on my Grey Goose tonight. The olive in that martini looks mighty tempting.

I'm not really complaining although it sounds like it. I just find behavior strange sometimes.

Good evening, Thanks for the bar cart. It is sorely needed.

Shelly I think your doll is a remake of a "Jenny Lind" doll, but its prolly not German or old.

It was just strange and to most people probably wouldn't matter. It is the job, after all.

We unpacked Christmas stuff today and found mouse evidence. They had chewed the berries off a very expensive garland that was used here at home. We've caught four but maybe we need to re-bait. Those four sure have made a mess.

I don't usually. That was the point. In both cases they stood at the front of the store. I usually say something like "Let's see what we can find" and head to the area of the store where I think there is something. In both cases I headed to the back of the back room and waited. And waited. Finally I got the message and picked up what I could carry and hauled it out. In the case of the candy dish lady she did finally follow me but we still had to haul every one out front and sit it beside the other choices. The teapot fellow stood his ground about ten steps inside the front door.

Evenin'! It's Friday. Isn't it? I didn't get much past recognizing daylight today. I don't know how there could be so many difficult customers in one day. People who stood just inside the store and waited while I trucked back and forth with items that I thought might meet their request. I hauled every candy dish for one women who was so ambiguous that I finally just wrapped up two and handed her the ticket. Later in the day there was a couple. The male wanted teapots. He stood at the front desk and waited while I searched out every single one in the store and brought it for his approval. Wonder how those people manage at Wal Mart?

Hi, shellyrae - Not many here are up on dolls, and I'm guessing you've asked the Doll Chat about it. You might get better results (and some answers) on the threaded Doll Chat at this link. You'll need to start a new topic and check back there for replies. I think it's busier than the Doll board here.

The metal surrounding your mirror looks to me like pot metal (mostly zinc). Have no idea if it's old or something produced for the tourist trade.

FOR GLOBAL ANTIQUES INFO USE

THE ANTIQUE BOARD'S "CLICK ME" POST

The link below will take you to a page of links containing information on art, antiques, shipping resources, paid appraisal services and pages about antiques of all description. If you're unable to find what you need, post a question on the board. Don't post your real email address.

* HOW TO PUT YOUR PICTURE HERE *

FOR NEW POSTERS - We can't see your image if it's still inside your own computer, and most prefer that you not ask to send pictures by email attachments. It's easier than ever to post images on this board...it's just different from posting an auction picture using eBay's server. If your internet provider doesn't give you room to store images (most do) you can use the image host at THIS LINK. Photobucket is a free permanent image host, and all you need to do is register a new account. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Once your image is uploaded and you can see it, right click on it, select Properties, and you'll see the URL (the internet address) the host has assigned to your image. Copy that URL and paste it in the message window here. The address will appear on the board as a blue clickable link we can use to see your item.
Simple as pie.

Describe the size of the item and any marks on it. This will greatly help us help you. Please don't ask how much something is worth...we don't know and cannot guess. It's worth only what a bidder is willing to pay for it. That's all. Keep checking back; it could take up to 6 hours for someone familiar with your item to see your question and leave an answer for you. If we don't respond, it's not because we don't want to help - it's because we can't.

Hi, bevsbeauts - If you have provenance for your pieces and lots of photos, you could try high-end auction houses like Southeby's or Christies. Both have websites. We really can't suggest smaller options similar to eBay by name here, that's against the rules of eBay. Google online auctions, though, and I suspect you'll find them.

Hello.. just looking for a little guidance. I have a couple of very high-end items, i.e. an 18th Century Kang'xi Dynasty blue and white plates (gorgeous!), a couple of very old Delft vases confirmed and dated 1881 by Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, a few very old Yale toby mugs, etc. I don't think ebay would bring the most money. Any idea where I can sell these? They are part of an estate I'm working on.
Thanks so much!

What a busy morning you all had! So did I -- an 8:30 am meeting and a 10:30 am meeting; the worst part is that I chaired both groups and scheduled the meetings. I originally had the second meeting at 10 am and then neglected to look closely at my calendar and scheduled the earlier meeting (the first was in Nanuet, NY, the second in Hackensack, NJ).

Plume, that's a beautiful dress, how wonderful to have that "moment" with DD3.

Here's my cranberry sauce recipe: 1 pound cranberries; 2 cups sugar (I only use 1 cup!!); 1/2 cup water; 1/8 tsp ground cloves; 1/8 tsp ground ginger; 1/2 tsp ground allspice; 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

In a saucepan, combine the cranberries, sugar, and water. Cook until some of the cranberry skins burst. Remove from heat and add seasonings. Makes slightly more than 1 quart, enough for 12 persons.

Jaxie - dress shopping IS fun. DD3 and I struck up a conversation with a first-time, older bride (38) who was all of 18 again, trying on dresses for her May wedding. If you'd like to see what DD3 picked out, look at David's Bridal online, style D18293 in "apple" red. The gown also comes with a satin wrap, and frankly - the picture on the model doesn't do the gown justice. DD3 wanted something that would allow her accessories to shine.

T-Gal, I am so sorry for your DS and his friend. Fifty is just too young.

Must have more coffee.

T-gal: I'm sorry about the wife of the driving buddy. How awful.

Rag: How well do sweet potatoes keep? We like them, too but only buy them on a "per meal" basis. There was a deal on them at our local grocery store and I balked at the size of the bag for fear I'd end up tossing half of them.

It's just pouring rain here -- it was raining so hard at 5:00 a.m., it woke us up out of a sound sleep.

Good morning.

Plume: A few years ago I went to Portland with three friends for a shopping spree. We were in a large store in the dressing rooms, and next to us were four teenage girls trying on prom dresses. Before long, the four of us oldsters were helping the four teenagers pick out dresses; we were giving thumbs up and thumbs down as they tried them on; bring them things to try on; and giving them thoughts on what their parents might say ["no way will your father like THAT one!"].

We had more dang fun with those girls; and they seemed to have fun and appreciate the non-mother opinions.

It was such a fun few hours and those girls looking amazing.

Redde, DD3 has an instinct for knowing what cuts and colors flatters her best; it's not that she doesn't like shopping, but she typically goes in with an idea of what she wants, having searched out ideas on the 'net, beforehand. She looked at an emerald green and sapphire blue gown in different cuts (she wanted jewel tones), but came back to the red without even trying them on; she was that pleased with the dress. (Can you believe it?)

Rag, we stopped at Wally's after the dress shop; seems that they are promoting the same deals, nationwide. Sweet potatoes are just 25 cents p/pound here, too. I needed to pick up mass quantities of green bean casserole ingredients. I made a batch to feed 18, this morning (for DH's office cook out) and will need to make it for 25, this Thursday. Glad it's an easy recipe!

Good morning, again. Junior and I are back In from The Out. The little mister is happily munching down his Beneful treats (one carrot shape and one pea pod shape), after which it will be nap time (I hope). Molly was not at her gate, today; odds are, she was indoors, as the weather is threatening to spit rain. A few doors down, and across the street from Molly lives the Pumpkin Brothers, two mature felines of the marmalade persuasion. One has a rough coat; the other - smooth. They are always waiting on their home porch when we pass by, and give us the stink-eye until we have passed by their domain. They always sit still as statues; I don't know if Junior has ever noticed them, as two yards down from them lives Zeus, Marla and Pebbles. This canine trio is familiar to Junior, for he used to be one of the pack (their people are his former owners). I think he'd like to visit Marla, because he always got along with her; Pebbles came to the family after Junior's departure; but Zeus? Zeus would like nothing better than to use Junior as a chew toy. The alpha German Shepherd and the alpha Chihuahua never saw eye to eye, literally or figuratively. Junior all but prances when we pass by their house ... on the other side of the street.

I am out for a walk, and you're not. Nyah!

DD3's special occasion(s) include a Christmas/winter formal, a military ball, and a Valentine's dance. She's a busy, young lady.

Last night, DD3 (age 16) and I went out so she could try on formal gowns; she has several events on the horizon. When she walked out of the fitting room in her first selection (red satin, mermaid cut, trumpet skirt) to stand in front of the big 3-way mirror, all heads turned. My jaw dropped. Our baby girl stood before me (in 3 inch heels), transformed into a DDG young woman. A matronly lady nearby leaned over and said, "You and your husband do good work." We do; and - we bought the dress.

Thank you for the belated birthday wishes. I think I can enjoy them more, now - as there was too much commotion on and around the actual day. I just hope that the Birthday Wrinkle Fairy doesn't see this as an opportunity to visit me a second time in one year. ;o)

Sorry, sorry, all Oprah-fans I have now made indignant. Please forgive me. I think I have an attitude because my sister and I were revisiting classic family Thanksgivings.

There was the year the Tickners across the street sent Pop over two days before, to invite us grandly to their festive gathering. As he was leaving, he casually tossed over his shoulder the request that we should also bring our dining room table and the 12 matching chairs.

Thank you, Lord, for our receipt of a previous invitation

So Oprah is finally quitting. Eventually.

I don't know if I can make adequate preparation for the flood of flattery, boo-hooing, huggery and recapitulation this event will trigger--is there that much insulin even in production?

And we've only got a year-plus.

It sounds like a great time -- I would go in a hot second if there wasn't 8 hours between us. :-)

DH and I are reading the new Jon Krakauer book -- about Pat Tillman [DH just finished it; I'm just starting it]. I think Krakauer's books are a bit sloggy with long-winded detail, but are good. DH was reading passages out loud -- I'm not sure I'll be able to read it without throwing it against the wall, but, I'll try. I'm also reading Edward Kennedy's memoir. In fact, I'm off to read Edward in bed.

Jaxie, it is a fun group. We try to pair our wines and food with the book we have been reading. Tonight was my "hostess" night, and we have been reading "White Tiger" about India, and I hated the book, pompous little a$$. But we had the usual bottle of white wine, red wine, and a bottle of pomegrante juice, plus various crackers, curried naan, celery, cukes, tahini, and other cheeses, including an absolutly incredible curried cream chees from the Grocery Outlet. If you have one in your town, frequent it once in a while. They have strange offerings. I bought the cheese today, and will be headed down tomorrow morning to buy another package or two. It was buttery, great tasting, and we went through the entire package.

PS - feel free to join our club at any time, we want more members!

night, all.

Jaxie - a couple of quotes from my Hoodport friend tonight:

"No I am quite sure it must be 10 feet cuz it hasn't stopped raining here in days! You should see the waterfalls coming off the hills on 101!"

"Talk with you tomorrow assuming we still have power. The trees are starting to get soggy and slide."

Her comments lead me to believe that "location location location" is not everything. Not that I didn't know that before!!!

On a completely different subject, those of you who are intersted in the English language, etc. will like the book I'm reading now, "The Professor and the Madman" by Simon Winchester - it's about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary.

We almost didn't stop because I had read some on-line reviews that said the store has changed in a not good way [lots of goods made overseas, etc.] but we had a blast in there. It is quite large. Have you ever been to a place where you see so many things that you want to buy that you are overwhelmed and leave with nothing? That's what it was like. And we were there only an hour or so before closing.

I just roamed around their web site -- what great stuff. And so many things that were great ideas, but, aren't seen any more.

I make something similar. Cover fresh cranberries with water and bring to a boil. Allow berries to pop. Drain off the liquid and stir in a little sugar while hot. Allow to cool. Add chopped pecans and Triple Sec. Refrigerate until ready to use. I hope I didn't leave anything out.

Ribbons: There's a famous store in Vermont [VT, help me here!] that has been around forever; I used to get their catalog a long time ago....it has all sort of homespun-ish, old-fashioned but cool stuff. Anyway, that laundry photo was taken there.

VT: Speaking of you, another Thanksgiving tip was to add a couple of tablespoons of maple syrup to the whipping cream for the pumpkin pie.

3 and I'm out.

I was watching a cooking show the other day [that perky, smiling woman] -- she was making Thanksgiving dishes that looked like a lot of effort went into the preparation [but really didn't]. I caught this one: she dumped a can of cranberry sauce or two in a dish -- added a swig of Grand Marnier, mixed in some orange zest, and finished it with chopped pecans. It looked really good.

Evening, all.

Birdsis: A friend moved to Olympia several years ago; she really howls about the bleak weather. When I asked if it was that much different than here, she said "ohhhh yeah."

DH went to a party in Hoodsport a couple of years ago at the home of someone we know slightly [family connection]. Wow -- she had a wonderful, long pier [dock?] out into the water. Lovely setting.

It seems like it would be a lonely area for a newly widowed person to live, but, I haven't been in that area in a long time -- maybe it has changed.

Bird, it's tradition in SC's family. Unflavored gelatin, chopped cabbage, onion and pimiento. Celery if you like. Made in individual molds. Turned up and served with a dollop of homemade mayonaise on top.

Good evening. We're moving into storm #4 tonight. Ribbons, what's perfection salad?

Jaxie, if you wander by, my friend lives in Hoodsport, on the canal, right at the eastern base of the Olympics. She said she's had 10 feet of rain, but I know she's stretching the truth a little because she has to commute to Olympia every morning - a dark, wet, soggy drive down #101, which has lots of slides even in the fairest of weather. I do not envy her. If you have any diver friends looking for a great place to buy, this is right up from the famous "Octopus Hole". It's not a happy place for her since her husband died two years ago.

Last night one of my dearest friends (the lady who's agreed to take my cats if something ever happens to me) emailed that her elderly cat Trouble (aka Bubba) keeled over dead. I called her and she was all torn up. Her DH is TDY now and she couldn't reach him to find out what she should do with the remains until the cat can be cremated. Apparently the cat had been ailing for some time, and picked last night to expire. At any rate, her vet is a sweet guy, and he arranged to meet her with Troubles at his office. He took the remains and today they were to have discussed the procedure.

These are the ones we pass, every day on just two streets; some we haven't met, yet. Goodness knows how many more are one street over. I was talking to Mom, last night. Her MD is not going to do anything about the cyst on her kidney; apparently - now that the UT infection has been cured - it's obvious to them that the cyst isn't such a much. Were it bigger, they'd got after it. That's the same line that I was given about the one I have on my thyroid. It's grown, since then, and they'd probably do an FNA now, but I'm not going after it, until I have insurance again.

The only deviation is for napkins, toilet paper, paper towels or canned tomato products. I am almost 67 and am no medication except for some Naproxen for arthitis. Something is working. I see folks in the grocery store with piles of frozen dinners. Read the labels and you will find most ingredients are unprounceable chemical names. I want fresh meat, veggies and good dairy products. (PS-I can pronounce those chemicals, and most are preservatives. Eat enough of them and you will not need a mortuary when you die. You will be preserved by what you eat. (off my stump)

Jaxie--I'm with you on the clear cuts. Just flying over the northwest makes me pout. There is a lot it of in the Cascades, not so much in the Rockies. Here when they clear cut they either plant back or nature takes it over and there is growth within a couple years. I really say not too much anymore after going up Mt. St. Helens and seeing all the growth amount along with the dead growth. That was encouraging.

errrm...morale [not moral].

Birdsis: Did your friend at least benefit from the logging? There are so many clearcuts between here and coast; it just makes me weep. There are three huge new ones that are on incredibly steep slopes. We were coming back from the coast a few weeks ago and there was a really large slash burn on one of them; was creepy seeing it from a distance at night as it looked like a forest fire.

DH and I cannot talk about clearcuts; it's a big hot button issue between us. He has a degree in foresty and spouts facts; I speal emotion and rant and rave about the environment, wildlife, aesthetics. It never ends well, so we sort of avoid the topic any more. Though today even he grumbled a bit about the three new ones. [A morale victory for meeee.]

Two and I'm out. Night.

Evening, all.

VT, Bamaj and Tgal: Thanks for the nice thoughts for DH. The new bondage doesn't make any difference in his mobility, but, it's a moral booster for sure.

Birdsis: 13"? Holy smokes. We went to the coast today; the winds didn't fire up until 4:30 and no rain -- the ocean was pretty wild. It was a bit eerie driving through areas where the firs lined the highway [lots of downed trees and broken boughs from the other day]. Ate a late lunch in a restaurant on a bluff with a great view. Nice day. My favorite bought-in-Scotland-on-a-freezing-day scarf almost blew to China; I had to chase it down.

"Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses", so Dorothy Parker once said. She said it quite rightly, they're sometimes unsightly. (But no one wears glasses to bed!)

Well the red tide is on its way out, I hope it don't come back soon.
I had to go to town today and meet the girls that I have to sometimes call on the phone. Its not a bad thing, its just not really needed. Won't hurt to be friendly but I had a lot of other things I think I need to be doing. Oh well.

jaxie - Glad to hear your DH is out of the plaster. It's all good from there. One of our coworkers had serious wrist surgery and is only now able to use her right hand to work her 4-speed Jeep. She had a temporary handicap sign that allowed her to drive a demo Lexus from her DH's dealership with her left hand. We enjoyed riding in the Lexus to lunches out. Heh. But too many little gizmos for me.

Evening folks!

Jaxie, I'm glad your DH is getting better, I bet he is twice as glad!

Here's a couple of neat photos I took today so I thought I would share with you. They are in the Reflections album.

sillychili - You should carry renter's insurance anyway. You need it for your clothes and personal belongings and it's a good expenditure. Mark will offer his artwork advice for free initially, tell him you found out about him here and if he thinks it's good he'll tell you and maybe give a better price for a formal appraisal. If he thinks what you have is junk, be warned he'll tell you that too. ;-D

oh wow..the only price I can find listed is 49.99 per item. That is way out of my range. My renter's insurance is only going to cost 20 a month..what should I do? Any suggestions?

An insurance company will require a written appraisal with photographs. That's pretty hard to do online.

If we don't respond, it's not because we don't want to help - it's because we can't.

sillychili - Most online appraisals offered for free and without a hands-on inspection aren't worth the email they send you. There should be a respectable antique appraiser in your local phonebook (or in the nearest large city). You'll need to pay a minimal fee for their expertise, but you'll find for insurance purposes that's better than an online guess. There are some links to appraisers in our board's blue helpful links post (one is board friend Mark Winter) who can offer assistance. I'm about to post that again, so watch for it.

Could be man has done a lot before he thinked. I don't think we made 50. The promise for tomorrow is better. I received a call from a friend today who is cleaning out their fridge and needed someone to come consume leftovers. I'm not proud. I accepted.

Hello! I am considering getting renter's insurance as I have accumulated some very nice things over the years but am not sure about how much to pay for an appraisal of my "stuff". I volunteer at a college art gallery and no one here seems to know much about it. Actually I was told that there is no one in town to appraise but that I could find affordable ones online. I have googled and googled but am still looking. Basically I have about 10 paintings and china and murano...these are the most important things in my collection as well as some large pieces of victorian furniture that I know aren't worth more that a couple of thousand each. Can someone point me in the right direction. I am hoping for affordability!

Thank you for your time.

Consider the auk;
Becoming extinct because he forgot how to fly, and could only walk.

A little something to ponder from Elbert Hubbards' little journeys booklet--"We are always contemplating that our days are few, and acting as though there would be no end of them". SENECA--that sorta makes a bit 'o sense to me.

Inny: We visited some folks not long ago --- the husband had the same scenario set up in his shop. He was just a happy clam out there with his tv, boat, tools, guy stuff. We only strolled through the house, but, it had neat-as-a-pin-slightly-not-lived-in feeling.

We do not use our living room much; not because it's special but because there's just two of us and the family room is connected to the kitchen. Though, we are using it now because there's a chair with an ottoman in there [toss a few pillows on that baby and it's perfect for elevating his leg]. I told our neighbor that it's like the movie Rear Window in reverse. ;-)
