I think somethings broke. Can;'t do a search. Maybe that will mean more to choose from in the next few days? Pickins are slim anyhow.

Looks like no buying or selling on eBay tonight -- search is messed up; everything comes back as zero items available (if it comes up at all).

Turned out to be a nice day. Went to our more upscale mall (Saks 5th Avenue and Bloomingdale's are the two anchor stores); Santa is already there. But, for a Saturday, the place was pretty empty.

Gone to construct supper such as it is. Dang. Nearly 8 hours for a nondescript hunka beef to become tender enough to re-add the veggies. And make some gravy. Seeyabye.

Sorry, for some reason I was thinking it was a week ago instead of today. Certainly would give you plenty of time to thaw one that size but no, I don't think domestic turkeys grow that large.

t-gal - Depends how big a bird you get. I wouldn't start thawing a whole bird until maybe Monday night. I don't have to worry with it. I have been invited to T-Day dinner by some friends (not the ones who scarfed up my lobster, but good folks who are aces in the kitchen).

Huh....I just surprised myself when I went down to the freezer to haul out a pork loin and it has disappeared! *I think we ate it a couple of weeks ago* Just one MORE thing to add to the grocery list for tomorrow! I think I'll buy my frozen bird and let it thaw in the fridge for a few days ... I know there's a chart somewhere that shows
pounds=days to thaw ... should go find it ...

Think I'll just go back to Tyson's pot roast in the meat section. Comes perfectly cooked with gravy, and you get a neat white plastic loaf-size pan good for all sorts of other things.

Hi, jaxie, I've done the same. The veggies have been rescued in time and are just cooling their collective heels in a bowl. I think now that the hunka beef has been opened up it's about to give up.

Bamaj: We are living in parallel cooking universes -- I had the same problem the other night. I took out all the veggies and tossed them in a bowl and continued cooking the heck out of the meat. I tossed the veggies back in for the last hour or so of cooking.

The meat was so-so; the potatoes were overcooked; and the carrots were undercooked.

Not one of my finer culinary efforts. :-/

T-gal: Yeah, we bought one right away and it worked sooo slick. But, he now has on a boot contraption and the cast cover isn't large enough to fit over the ankle angle.

Ribbons: We did the trash bag and tape routine.

Boy, if you are ever in a situation like this and the PA asks "do you want all this stuff?" [cast liner sock; ace bandages with cool velcro, ice bag etc.] when you get a new splint, or cast, or boot...say YES, INDEED. DH sort of cringed when I said yes, but, we are happy now. They sure come in handy at shower or icing time.

redkheros - What are the marks? And are you certain of the spelling of your pottery name? I had one of those, BAMA ... most frustrating and disappointing! I will NEVER put another one in a pot w/o tenderizer again !!! Take the veggies out, carefully, and let it cook some more? Nuke it?

Greetings, all. I'm trying to make a beef pot roast for tonight and for leftovers, and the darn hunka beef in there refuses to get tender. It's been in the oven braising for nearly 5 hours. The poor veggies with it will be nothing but mush soon. Might have to make something else for supper. #2 Alabama won in a cakewalk today over non-conf opponent UT-Chattanooga (45-0), #1 Florida beat in-state rival FIU (whodat?) 62-3, both teams remain unbeaten at 11-0. They will play each other for the SEC Championship on Dec 5. Am listening to the LSU/Ole Miss game now.
I give up. I can't follow Lucy-ese. And I used to be good at reading typo.

I am going to make my own fruited, curry chicken salad. This version calls for red grapes, raisins and finely chopped apple. I am trying to decide if it would be best with curried mayo or a blend of curried mayo and yogurt. *Decisions, decisions...* Also batching up some vegetable and chicken stocks; I don't know about y'all but we go through it like crazy in this house.

Lucy, I just picked them up at a local grocery that had a display. On the display was a coupon that offered a free bag with the purchase of one. There was a pecan, peanut and something else cluster, but I'm a big fan of almonds and cranberries, so I bought two of those. Glad I did, too.

I am miffed. A new pair of dark jeans was a real color bleeder, and though I washed it with other darks, it damaged almost the whole load. Now, I have to go buy one of those color release kits, and hope for the best; and yeah - the load got dried (DD3 moved them into the dryer without noticing what had happened). I don't know if color releasers work after the dye has been allowed to set.

Ribbons, I'm not sure why beer (and wine) can be brewed, but not hard liquor. We could probably look up the law on the net, but without having done so, I'm willing to wager that The Reason has something to do with the government and taxes. If folks could make their own, Uncle Sam would be harder pressed to collect coins for his coffers.

SC and TK did that. I think their batch was ready in a couple of weeks. Pretty good too. I don't understand why they can do that and Popcorn had to die.

Ribbons, get a time check. Those posted are one the Left Coast, probably through the efforts of Jaxie. As she lives on the coast of Oregon, she has wedged her timeframe into ours. Curse her.

Let us see. Stack the deck chairs and cover for the winter, mulch and bag the remaining leaves, put the big grill on the deck for winter, plant bulbs, get pine sap off the car, clean the carpet in dining room, three (at least) loads of laundry, and something else, I am sure needs to be done today. Other than that, it is an easy day.

It was just strange and to most people probably wouldn't matter. It is the job, after all.

We unpacked Christmas stuff today and found mouse evidence. They had chewed the berries off a very expensive garland that was used here at home. We've caught four but maybe we need to re-bait. Those four sure have made a mess.

I don't usually. That was the point. In both cases they stood at the front of the store. I usually say something like "Let's see what we can find" and head to the area of the store where I think there is something. In both cases I headed to the back of the back room and waited. And waited. Finally I got the message and picked up what I could carry and hauled it out. In the case of the candy dish lady she did finally follow me but we still had to haul every one out front and sit it beside the other choices. The teapot fellow stood his ground about ten steps inside the front door.

Evenin'! It's Friday. Isn't it? I didn't get much past recognizing daylight today. I don't know how there could be so many difficult customers in one day. People who stood just inside the store and waited while I trucked back and forth with items that I thought might meet their request. I hauled every candy dish for one women who was so ambiguous that I finally just wrapped up two and handed her the ticket. Later in the day there was a couple. The male wanted teapots. He stood at the front desk and waited while I searched out every single one in the store and brought it for his approval. Wonder how those people manage at Wal Mart?

Hi, shellyrae - Not many here are up on dolls, and I'm guessing you've asked the Doll Chat about it. You might get better results (and some answers) on the threaded Doll Chat at this link. You'll need to start a new topic and check back there for replies. I think it's busier than the Doll board here.

The metal surrounding your mirror looks to me like pot metal (mostly zinc). Have no idea if it's old or something produced for the tourist trade.

I also have this small vanity mirror, Has an N in the center of the bottom piece, and a tag saying made in Italy on the back..
Wonder if it is as old as it looks.. It measures nearly 8" tall. Thanks again for taking a look.. Shelly

FOR GLOBAL ANTIQUES INFO USE

THE ANTIQUE BOARD'S "CLICK ME" POST

The link below will take you to a page of links containing information on art, antiques, shipping resources, paid appraisal services and pages about antiques of all description. If you're unable to find what you need, post a question on the board. Don't post your real email address.

* HOW TO PUT YOUR PICTURE HERE *

FOR NEW POSTERS - We can't see your image if it's still inside your own computer, and most prefer that you not ask to send pictures by email attachments. It's easier than ever to post images on this board...it's just different from posting an auction picture using eBay's server. If your internet provider doesn't give you room to store images (most do) you can use the image host at THIS LINK. Photobucket is a free permanent image host, and all you need to do is register a new account. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Once your image is uploaded and you can see it, right click on it, select Properties, and you'll see the URL (the internet address) the host has assigned to your image. Copy that URL and paste it in the message window here. The address will appear on the board as a blue clickable link we can use to see your item.
Simple as pie.

Describe the size of the item and any marks on it. This will greatly help us help you. Please don't ask how much something is worth...we don't know and cannot guess. It's worth only what a bidder is willing to pay for it. That's all. Keep checking back; it could take up to 6 hours for someone familiar with your item to see your question and leave an answer for you. If we don't respond, it's not because we don't want to help - it's because we can't.

Hi, bevsbeauts - If you have provenance for your pieces and lots of photos, you could try high-end auction houses like Southeby's or Christies. Both have websites. We really can't suggest smaller options similar to eBay by name here, that's against the rules of eBay. Google online auctions, though, and I suspect you'll find them.

Hello.. just looking for a little guidance. I have a couple of very high-end items, i.e. an 18th Century Kang'xi Dynasty blue and white plates (gorgeous!), a couple of very old Delft vases confirmed and dated 1881 by Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, a few very old Yale toby mugs, etc. I don't think ebay would bring the most money. Any idea where I can sell these? They are part of an estate I'm working on.
Thanks so much!

What a busy morning you all had! So did I -- an 8:30 am meeting and a 10:30 am meeting; the worst part is that I chaired both groups and scheduled the meetings. I originally had the second meeting at 10 am and then neglected to look closely at my calendar and scheduled the earlier meeting (the first was in Nanuet, NY, the second in Hackensack, NJ).

Plume, that's a beautiful dress, how wonderful to have that "moment" with DD3.

Here's my cranberry sauce recipe: 1 pound cranberries; 2 cups sugar (I only use 1 cup!!); 1/2 cup water; 1/8 tsp ground cloves; 1/8 tsp ground ginger; 1/2 tsp ground allspice; 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

In a saucepan, combine the cranberries, sugar, and water. Cook until some of the cranberry skins burst. Remove from heat and add seasonings. Makes slightly more than 1 quart, enough for 12 persons.

Jaxie - dress shopping IS fun. DD3 and I struck up a conversation with a first-time, older bride (38) who was all of 18 again, trying on dresses for her May wedding. If you'd like to see what DD3 picked out, look at David's Bridal online, style D18293 in "apple" red. The gown also comes with a satin wrap, and frankly - the picture on the model doesn't do the gown justice. DD3 wanted something that would allow her accessories to shine.

T-Gal, I am so sorry for your DS and his friend. Fifty is just too young.

Good morning.

Plume: A few years ago I went to Portland with three friends for a shopping spree. We were in a large store in the dressing rooms, and next to us were four teenage girls trying on prom dresses. Before long, the four of us oldsters were helping the four teenagers pick out dresses; we were giving thumbs up and thumbs down as they tried them on; bring them things to try on; and giving them thoughts on what their parents might say ["no way will your father like THAT one!"].

We had more dang fun with those girls; and they seemed to have fun and appreciate the non-mother opinions.

It was such a fun few hours and those girls looking amazing.

Redde, DD3 has an instinct for knowing what cuts and colors flatters her best; it's not that she doesn't like shopping, but she typically goes in with an idea of what she wants, having searched out ideas on the 'net, beforehand. She looked at an emerald green and sapphire blue gown in different cuts (she wanted jewel tones), but came back to the red without even trying them on; she was that pleased with the dress. (Can you believe it?)

Rag, we stopped at Wally's after the dress shop; seems that they are promoting the same deals, nationwide. Sweet potatoes are just 25 cents p/pound here, too. I needed to pick up mass quantities of green bean casserole ingredients. I made a batch to feed 18, this morning (for DH's office cook out) and will need to make it for 25, this Thursday. Glad it's an easy recipe!

Good morning, again. Junior and I are back In from The Out. The little mister is happily munching down his Beneful treats (one carrot shape and one pea pod shape), after which it will be nap time (I hope). Molly was not at her gate, today; odds are, she was indoors, as the weather is threatening to spit rain. A few doors down, and across the street from Molly lives the Pumpkin Brothers, two mature felines of the marmalade persuasion. One has a rough coat; the other - smooth. They are always waiting on their home porch when we pass by, and give us the stink-eye until we have passed by their domain. They always sit still as statues; I don't know if Junior has ever noticed them, as two yards down from them lives Zeus, Marla and Pebbles. This canine trio is familiar to Junior, for he used to be one of the pack (their people are his former owners). I think he'd like to visit Marla, because he always got along with her; Pebbles came to the family after Junior's departure; but Zeus? Zeus would like nothing better than to use Junior as a chew toy. The alpha German Shepherd and the alpha Chihuahua never saw eye to eye, literally or figuratively. Junior all but prances when we pass by their house ... on the other side of the street.

I am out for a walk, and you're not. Nyah!

DD3's special occasion(s) include a Christmas/winter formal, a military ball, and a Valentine's dance. She's a busy, young lady.

Last night, DD3 (age 16) and I went out so she could try on formal gowns; she has several events on the horizon. When she walked out of the fitting room in her first selection (red satin, mermaid cut, trumpet skirt) to stand in front of the big 3-way mirror, all heads turned. My jaw dropped. Our baby girl stood before me (in 3 inch heels), transformed into a DDG young woman. A matronly lady nearby leaned over and said, "You and your husband do good work." We do; and - we bought the dress.

Thank you for the belated birthday wishes. I think I can enjoy them more, now - as there was too much commotion on and around the actual day. I just hope that the Birthday Wrinkle Fairy doesn't see this as an opportunity to visit me a second time in one year. ;o)

Sorry, sorry, all Oprah-fans I have now made indignant. Please forgive me. I think I have an attitude because my sister and I were revisiting classic family Thanksgivings.

There was the year the Tickners across the street sent Pop over two days before, to invite us grandly to their festive gathering. As he was leaving, he casually tossed over his shoulder the request that we should also bring our dining room table and the 12 matching chairs.

Thank you, Lord, for our receipt of a previous invitation

So Oprah is finally quitting. Eventually.

I don't know if I can make adequate preparation for the flood of flattery, boo-hooing, huggery and recapitulation this event will trigger--is there that much insulin even in production?

And we've only got a year-plus.

It sounds like a great time -- I would go in a hot second if there wasn't 8 hours between us. :-)

DH and I are reading the new Jon Krakauer book -- about Pat Tillman [DH just finished it; I'm just starting it]. I think Krakauer's books are a bit sloggy with long-winded detail, but are good. DH was reading passages out loud -- I'm not sure I'll be able to read it without throwing it against the wall, but, I'll try. I'm also reading Edward Kennedy's memoir. In fact, I'm off to read Edward in bed.

Jaxie, it is a fun group. We try to pair our wines and food with the book we have been reading. Tonight was my "hostess" night, and we have been reading "White Tiger" about India, and I hated the book, pompous little a$$. But we had the usual bottle of white wine, red wine, and a bottle of pomegrante juice, plus various crackers, curried naan, celery, cukes, tahini, and other cheeses, including an absolutly incredible curried cream chees from the Grocery Outlet. If you have one in your town, frequent it once in a while. They have strange offerings. I bought the cheese today, and will be headed down tomorrow morning to buy another package or two. It was buttery, great tasting, and we went through the entire package.

PS - feel free to join our club at any time, we want more members!

Jaxie - a couple of quotes from my Hoodport friend tonight:

"No I am quite sure it must be 10 feet cuz it hasn't stopped raining here in days! You should see the waterfalls coming off the hills on 101!"

"Talk with you tomorrow assuming we still have power. The trees are starting to get soggy and slide."

Her comments lead me to believe that "location location location" is not everything. Not that I didn't know that before!!!

On a completely different subject, those of you who are intersted in the English language, etc. will like the book I'm reading now, "The Professor and the Madman" by Simon Winchester - it's about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary.

I was walking down the hall and the name of the store popped into my brain so I came back to post it -- but I see you two knew right away.

We almost didn't stop because I had read some on-line reviews that said the store has changed in a not good way [lots of goods made overseas, etc.] but we had a blast in there. It is quite large. Have you ever been to a place where you see so many things that you want to buy that you are overwhelmed and leave with nothing? That's what it was like. And we were there only an hour or so before closing.

I just roamed around their web site -- what great stuff. And so many things that were great ideas, but, aren't seen any more.

Evening, all.

Birdsis: A friend moved to Olympia several years ago; she really howls about the bleak weather. When I asked if it was that much different than here, she said "ohhhh yeah."

DH went to a party in Hoodsport a couple of years ago at the home of someone we know slightly [family connection]. Wow -- she had a wonderful, long pier [dock?] out into the water. Lovely setting.

Good evening. We're moving into storm #4 tonight. Ribbons, what's perfection salad?

Jaxie, if you wander by, my friend lives in Hoodsport, on the canal, right at the eastern base of the Olympics. She said she's had 10 feet of rain, but I know she's stretching the truth a little because she has to commute to Olympia every morning - a dark, wet, soggy drive down #101, which has lots of slides even in the fairest of weather. I do not envy her. If you have any diver friends looking for a great place to buy, this is right up from the famous "Octopus Hole". It's not a happy place for her since her husband died two years ago.

Happy belated b-day, plume. :-)

Last night one of my dearest friends (the lady who's agreed to take my cats if something ever happens to me) emailed that her elderly cat Trouble (aka Bubba) keeled over dead. I called her and she was all torn up. Her DH is TDY now and she couldn't reach him to find out what she should do with the remains until the cat can be cremated. Apparently the cat had been ailing for some time, and picked last night to expire. At any rate, her vet is a sweet guy, and he arranged to meet her with Troubles at his office. He took the remains and today they were to have discussed the procedure.

Well, we all went to lunch. I had pig. Ribs, squash, pinto beans and cornbread. That's pretty tall hog at the trough for locals.

Plume, grapes? There used to be a restaurant here that had an oriental theme that served a similar chicken salad. It was really good. People always asked her for the recipe but she would not share it.

I am in pig heaven, having just finished a cup full of fruited, curried chicken salad. It's homemade at a little restaurant in Summerville, that is called - Simply Delicious. I don't know about anything else on their menu, but this? ... is. :)

Plume: What day was your birthday? I hope it was a good one! I always think it's odd when I have to say my age out loud -- that's the only time I think "I am old."

That whole hanging laundry thing makes me nuts. That's what prompted this display in Vermont:

Gotta get. Later!

Jjones6423: I found one listed online for $425 (Canadian); no idea if the seller (posted ad in October) got what s/he was asking. Seems that you might get a more accurate idea of it's current, market value if you contacted music stores that sell refurbed stereo components - or - do more digging on the web. There are no completed listings of your model, presently on Ebay.

Jersey, thank you. Boring is good; I could grow to LIKE boring. I look forward to seeing your pix later, but for now - I must fly; I've been invited to lunch by my guy, who happens to be working 'round the corner. Lucky me! BBL - maybe.

Good morning from cloudy NJ, easing my way into the day. Just got a call from our technology-challenged neighbors -- the cleaning lady unplugged something from the tv/cable box and they don't know where it should go.

Here are the photos from my weekend in Virginia/DC, first the National Zoo and second the ice skating show:

Plume, a belated but very special HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you! I hope it was great and that it's followed by a relatively boring year. ;~)
